I think all labels have been 'redefined' now. With sub-labels to boot 🤣

I've heard some things that were labeled R&B, and just shake my head 😎

No, that was decided when the elements of Jazz came into play, namely: Improvisation and interaction among the musicians.

The sub-genres of Jazz are missing the interaction, i.e. call and response. No one interacts with the soloists. Everyone just plays a predetermined part while the soloist plays. That's more like a classical music orchestra, where the orchestra supports a soloist.

At least that's what I experienced during my 60 yrs. as a professional Jazz musician.

You may have your own definition.
