Buying a car privately

Post by berlinmichael »

Previously I've only bought a car from a dealer when together with my ex wife they handled all the paperwork. Now I'm looking at a car being sold privately by a Thai owner. Can anyone advise what documents I need to have or pitfalls to avoid? I have no Thai myself so probably wide open to any mischief! Thanks in advance.....

To transfer the vehicle at the DLT you need the following:

Passport copy, visa copy
Proof of address letter (or yellow book copy)
Blue registration book for the car signed by previous owner
ID card copy of previous owner, signed

... unless things have changed as they do frequently ...

I haven't done a transfer in PKK or HH yet. Bought new last year, and dealer did all with 'free' insurance.

When doing in Udon Thani, private sale, as budsida stated, along with need for insurance coverage. At UT, there was always a helpful translator for foreigners, free, and just happen to be a rep for insurance 🤣 All you need for registrations, is the very basic, for the 3rd party placard to be placed on the windshield. < 1000 baht, I believe. Any other coverage is optional, so don't feel obligated if a tout is in the area.

Simply process.

If the car is registered outside the province, then it has to be 'sold' in that province. Otherwise, the car will need to be re-registered in PKK.

That is a completely different game and both the buyer and seller needs to attend. The Pranburi office can't handle it and it means a trip (or two) to the Prachuab office.
