Major companies and attractions in Thailand that may not survive Covid-19

A major water slide attraction in my area being reclaimed by nature. The other at Cartoon Network is in mothballs as well and I really don't think they'll reopen without massive maintenance/rebuild. As it stands they are both now unsafe. Perhaps we should rename vines like that "Covidvines", as they seem to be growing on everything, taxis as well per the photo from last week.

Thai research body predicts a million jobless by year end if pandemic persists
Thailand’s economic think-tank, the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI), predicts that the number of unemployed in the kingdom will reach one million by the end of this year, if the COVID-19 pandemic remains uncontrollable.

Associate Professor Yongyuth Chalamwong, director of labour development research in the TDRI’s human resources and social development department, told Thai PBS today (Tuesday) that the partial lockdown measures, imposed by the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration since late July, has had an extensive impact on businesses and the labour market.

He warned that, if the situation persists until year end, about a million people will have lost their jobs, accounting for 2.5-3% of people of working age.

To cushion the impacts on affected people, he suggests that the government provide cash subsidies of at least 100 baht a day, until the pandemic situation improves.

Industries mood at 16-month low in August over virus restrictions
Industries sentiment declined for a fifth straight month in August to 16-month low, hurt by tougher restrictions to contain the country's biggest coronavirus outbreak and infections at factories, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) said on Wednesday.

The measures were imposed in July in 13 provinces including Bangkok before being extended into August and expanded to 29 provinces. Those curbs have been relaxed from this month.

The FTI said its industries sentiment index dropped to 76.8 in August from 78.9 in July.

"The economy sharply slowed due to the curbs ... while outbreaks at factories have yet to ease, affecting production, particularly in export-based industries," FTI chairman Supant Mongkolsuthree told a briefing.

Consumer sentiment takes a spill
Consumer confidence plunged to the lowest level in almost 23 years in August thanks to the government's tight restrictions to contain Covid-19 spread in 29 provinces.

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) reported on Thursday the consumer confidence index fell to 39.6 in August from 40.9 in July, 43.1 in June, 44.7 in May, 46 in April, 48.5 in March, 49.4 in February and 47.8 in January.

"Consumer confidence fell for the sixth straight month in August, dipping to the lowest level since October 1998 as people remain concerned about the rapid spread of the Delta variant that led the government to impose tougher lockdown and curfew measures in 29 dark red provinces. The measures harshly affected people's lives and businesses, worsening the country's economy," said UTCC president Thanavath Phonvichai.

"There is also much uncertainty over the government's vaccine distribution plan, political instability and poor economic prospects."

Obviously some of these insurance companies thought they were clever and slick and would have a profit windfall. Surprise, surprise.

Covid policy holders crowd compensation claims office

Many hundreds of people showed up at the General Insurance Fund office on Monday to claim lump-sum payments for Covid-19 policies with two bankrupt insurers, greatly exceeding the number the office could handle.

Claimants had started to queue on Sunday night outside the claims office in Suan Lum Nite Bazar shopping arcade on Ratchadaphisek Road.

They wanted compensation due from Covid-19 policies taken out with Thai Insurance and Southeast Insurance. The Office of the General Insurance Fund is their liquidator.

Affected policy holders can file their documents in person at the office and at nationwide branches of the Office of the Insurance Commission (OIC), or online at https://rps-sev.gif.or.th/Login until July 15.

The Office of the General Insurance Fund can accept 500 compensation claims a day at its premises, and some people were left hanging on Monday.

According to the OIC, the accumulated value of Covid insurance claims with lump-sum payments reached nearly 60 billion baht at the end of March. Total premiums received from Covid insurance were 11 billion baht as of March 15.

Sixteen insurance companies, of a total of 52, offered Covid insurance with lump-sum payment.

Six or seven of the 16 firms recorded massive policy sales and four of them - Asia Insurance, The One Insurance, Southeast Insurance and Thai Insurance - were forced to shut down because they did not have sufficient premiums and capital reserves to pay out the claims.
