Brewer-turned-politician Taopiphop Limjittrakorn has been fighting to overhaul strict regulations for years, taking on Boon Rawd Brewery and ThaiBev, which have long had a stranglehold on the production of alcohol.
After winning the most seats in the May 14 electon, Move Forward this week reached an agreement with prospective coalition partners that include measures to “abolish monopolies and promote fair competition in all industries, such as alcoholic beverages”.
“The progressive alcohol bill is not only a bill, it is a political project,” said Mr Taopiphop, 34, who was re-elected in Bangkok Constituency 22, in an interview at his Taopiphop Bar Project on Charoen Rat Road.
“Now, I’m gathering all the stakeholders in this policy to make it happen as smoothly as I can because I realise that we are not the opposition any more. We are government.”
Boon Rawd, which makes Singha and Leo beers, and ThaiBev, the brewer of Chang, did not immediately respond to questions from Reuters.
Boon Rawd, the country’s first brewery founded in 1933, is owned and controlled by the Bhirombhakdi family, the country’s 15th richest, according to Forbes magazine. ThaiBev was founded by Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, ranked by Forbes as the country’s third-richest person with a net worth of $14 billion.

Breaking up the monopolies will be better for the consumer. It's an agreed part of the coalitions MOU.

There are sufficient to possibly/probably put a stop to Move Forward forming the next government - I hope I’m wrong, but those who have lots to lose will do their upmost to prevent it.

As someone who treats a cold beer as a god, this would be fantastic. One of the very few things I miss in thailand is a decent beer, the Singha, Chang and especially Leo abominations are utter crap. As a nation Thailand has the worst beers in any country I've ever visited. Peroni etc making their way in would be amazing! But first they will have to rerite the import taxation laws, and I can't see there being a massive appetite for that from any party.
Chang might also have a problem at Baan Khan Por given they've got exclusive rights to only have their beer served there which they paid a small fortune for. Infact anyone bringing in a different brand currently get asked to leave!

Plans to increase the rate at which non-alcoholic beers are taxed in Thailand risk disrupting the nascent category, according to analysts at GlobalData.
Presently, low- and no-alcohol beers are taxed at 14%, on a par with non-alcoholic beverages including carbonates, whilst an excise tax of 22% is levied on the retail sales price of alcoholic beer.
However, the Thai Public Health Ministry is mulling over whether to increase the excise tax on non-alcoholic beers, amid suggestions Thai consumers are seeing them as an alternative to other non-alcoholic beverages including soft drinks.
The move, according to Bobby Verghese, a consumer analyst at GlobalData, is also driven by fears alcoholic drinks brands are using their non-alcoholic SKUs to promote their parent brand.

The tax on beer is a lot higher than 22% which could explain why Thai beer is less than half the price in neighboring countries. Taxing non-alcoholic stuff is plain stupid, but then most of what the Thai govt does is plain stupid.

Priyanka Jain, a consumer analyst at Global Data, said Thai manufacturers are “facing enormous challenges amid high inflationary pressures” that have led to increased prices. However, the price hikes may have gone too far if nearly two-thirds of drinkers are staying away from booze.
“Moreover, the limited shelf presence and high price point of low-/no-alcohol products are compelling Thai consumers to opt for cheaper alternatives,” Jain said.

I was in Makro HH earlier and they had Oranjeboon at 109B a can, so either Cha Am have made a cockup on their pricing, or it’s near/past it’s sell by date and marked down 50%?Dannie Boy wrote:Sounds like a great price - hopefully they have plenty in stock!!

I bought 14 more cans last Friday (2 June) at 55 baht per can. The BBE date is 25 FEB 2024. For those that are interested, I would recommend getting there at 11:00 when the shelf has been freshly stocked. When I went on a different day at around 13:00, the shelf was already empty.

Well I was either too late or too early - I arrived at 11.15 and there was just one can left - I very reluctantly took that and will look next time I’m there (normally we get there before beer serving time) after 11am!!
