Canon Camera Repair

Post by Big Boy »

Yes, I know I only play with toy 'point and shoot' cameras, but anything more difficult sort of turns me off.

My latest camera, a Canon PowerShot SX740 HS was a little more expensive than I normally pay, but I love the camera. The lens has developed a fault, and the camera simply decides to switch off and reset randomly. The error is "Error 60," which when you look it up says switch off and reset. Really annoying when you have the perfect shot lined up.

Normally, I'd just bin the camera and buy a new one, but with this one being a bit more expensive than I normally buy, I just thought it might be worth asking a repairer about fixing the problem. Problem is, where do you take a broken camera? Or am I as well considering it a 'throw away' item and just buying a new one?

I know as much about cameras as I know about golf, so any advice would be gratefully received.

I can only suggest Bangkok, which is where I take Nikons that need attention. There are no camera specialists in HH as far as I know, just shiny shops in malls that want to sell you more stuff.

Lens faults are usually too expensive to bother fixing also unless its under warranty and can go back to the Canon service center.

So, I think you are suggesting replace is the most effective way

I've just tried that, so I guess I hold on to my Baht for a few more days to see the response, if I actually receive one.

I think that understandably, they can’t do much more until someone has inspected it to try and establish the problem - obviously it requires a bit of faith in sending it to them, but hopefully it’ll be worth it!!

My problem is that I am not normally a 'repair' kind of guy unless its house or car. I'm usually a throwaway and replace guy. I think this time, paying about 6x what I would normally, I presumed it would last forever  . I'm just a bit stunned that it only lasted 2 years.

I've decided to buy a new one. Once it arrives, I'll probably send the other camera off to see if it is worth repairing. If it is, then I'll have a spare. Unfortunately, I can't afford to be without a camera for a couple of weeks.

I tried to process the latest photos last night, and every image was damaged - I've probably had to crop about 1/16th of each image, so the problem is worsening.

Don't have one on your phone? The camera on the new phone I just bought kicks arse, so much so that the DSLRs only come out for special occasions now!

Yes, I know phone cameras are very good, but I hate using them. Especially in sunlight, I have to point, click and hope for the best - I can't see what I'm taking. Most of my Khao Tao photos are taken that way, but the carbunkle is an easy target  . My eyesight is generally brilliant since my 2nd cataract op, but I can't see a phone screen in normal sunlight. It is a me problem - nothing to do with phones. I've said it before, my son's phone was quite cheap, but his photos are excellent.

You do realize you can crank the screen brightness up manually when in sunlight ... the auto brightness setting often doesn't automatically react to rapid light intensity changes.

Yes, I've tried that. It helps a little, but still not really a solution for me.
