Diabetic
Hi, I'm looking for some help and information if possible.
My good wife is diabetic (the bad one's NOT!!) sorry I shouldn't joke about a serious subject For the record, I've only got one wife and in the last few weeks she has had to start taking pills to try and control her diabeties.
1) Is there a Diabetic clinic in Hua Hin? If so how does it work?
2) Would it be possible to buy Metformin 500mg tablets in Hua Hin?
3) She also takes Simvastatin 40mg tablets to control cholesterol, are they available?
As I say any help or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

Don,
I know its not the best loved place in Hua Hin, but if all else fails, I know that both tablets are available from San Paulo Hospital. As you go through the main entrance, the pharmacy section is on the right. Beside the counter they have (or at least they did) a display cabinet showing the various tablets they can supply.
Having a similar condition, I checked out whether they had the tablets I use (include Metformin and Simvastatin). Both were displayed.

Mr. D.
Good advice BB, but failing that, or instead of that, try the large chemist on the night-market road (opposite a large newsagents). It's not far from the side entrance to the wet market. The man behind the counter speaks, and understands English, and judging by the amount of stock they have I'm sure he could come up with what you want.
They maybe a tad cheaper than San Paulo, so if it's regular medicine then it's worth a try.
Good luck,

VS is that the one on the main road going out towards Cha Am. Is a very smart looking place and has a pharmacy next to it that is also part of his business. he has a sign on the window saying that he can speak good English.
He advertises in the local papers as well
I used this one when I was there as my GF ran out of Blood Pressure Tabs that are only available in Australia on a script.
He has like a small room on the side where you do the inquiries and after I showed him the box, he looked in his book and found just what I wanted. He did speak very good English and also split up a box of the tabs as we only needed enough until we got home.
I went round all of the others in town and he was the only one that I found that knew what he was talking about.

No, it's not on the main Phetkasem Road it's on the Soi running off that road that has the nightmarket on it - sorry, I have no idea of the name of the road.
They may not have what BB and Don want but it's worth a try. It's also worth wandering around the numerous chemists in the town (there are certainly a lot of them) and asking for whatever medication you need. Most of them can read English even it they don't speak it particularly well, so write the name on a piece of paper and show it to them.
Be warned, however, that they may try and sell you something that isn't suitable. I have memories of trying to buy Iboprufen at a chemist in Nakhon Pathom. She didn't understand what I was saying, I then explained that the pills I normally buy are pink. She then proceeded to show me any pill she had on her shelf with a smidgeon of pink on it! White & pink, pink sandwich, what about pink & yellow? Goodness knows what they were, but they weren't what I wanted...
I'm sure you'll be able to find what you want in one of the shops. A lot of people in Thailand suffer from type 2 diabetes, so I would imagine that the pills to control it should be quite easily available.

VS,
I know the pharmacy you are referring to very well - my wife often pops in there to get bits and bobs for her friends in the UK. You are quite right when you say the guy in there is very helpful. The other good thing is if he doesn't have it, he'll tell you, and even though he may offer you a proper substitute, he will not put you under any pressure to buy.

Having read the last few post on this page I'm after similar info to what the O/P was after...
..I feel I may have contracted diabetes and want to get tested..
..my main worry is getting true results from the health institutions in
HH,plus if I have symptoms, I need correct medication, not bags of
various coloured tabs that'll cure anything from pox to mad-cow-disease.
Can you folk recommend anywhere (other than S.P.hospital) here,or
do I go to Pet'buri?

This is the pharmacy that I used. It is the Daily pharmacy, details are below.
Works from early in the morning till late in the evening, owner very well specialised in his line of work, fluent English, and very fair prices, near San Paulo Hospital.

Before paying huge amounts can I suggest that you go to a local pharmacy and buy a testing kit. It simply involes pricking your finger and putting a smidgen of blood on to a sensor strip. They are not expensive (in the UK, don't know about Thailand) and are very accurate. I don't suppose any Thai medical institution would do anything different if you walked in off the street. Personally, it allows me to check my sugar levels on a regular basis, but I also have the kit to test my entire family and friends whenever they ask.
If I were in Thailand at the moment, I'd meet up with you and test you for free. I've done the test on several friends and have advised them whether they need to seek medical help - the kit has never been wrong yet.

Usual Suspect,
would you mind posting the cost of the testing kit, replacement sensors and 'pricker' needles together where you bought it? I very much doubt that I will be able to purchase spares for my current machine (getting old now), and I'll need to look at replacing it when I move to Thailand permanently.

Hey there BB.
Went to the chemist-shop, had no kits but my Mrs ordered 1 for me.
Have to pick it up 2day, dunno the content included, but at 3,500b the
price is maybe steep or the kit is comprehensive....???.
(the 'poly-clinic' opp. Esso garage wanted 1200b for a single test)
I had to go to hospital this weekend up in Buriram with acute
stomach pain, they tested my blood/sugar level there,-as well as many
other things, dunno what was wrong inside, but an hour later + a
coupla injections I was fine...all tested OK for total sum of 470b!
Will let you know more when I see this kit, bye 4 now...

usual suspect,
The cost in the UK starts at less than 10 Pounds - all UK kits are comprehensive. The kit is usually the loss leader, they tend to make their money on the repeat business of packs of sensors and needles.
Repeat Business/Thailand I think I've read this somewhere before.
My kit was actually free.
