Easiest and Fastest way from Hua Hin to Koh Samui

Post by polojunk »

Hi guys,

I'm planning on visiting Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao. I hear that there's no direct flights from Hua Hin to Koh Samui. Does anyone know what's the fastest way to from Hua Hin to these islands? (no trains please)

Specifically:
1) Hua Hin to Koh Tao
2) Hua Hin to Koh Samui

Is it easier and faster to take the Ferry (Lomprayah Ferry)
or taking the bus from Hua Hin to Chumphon / Surattani, then take the ferry over.

If it's better to go by bus, and I'm trying to get to Samui, would I take it to Chumphon or Suratthani?

If you guys know the approximate total time, please also let me know.

Many Thanks!
~Mike

Hua Hin to Koh Tao

Post by playboy »

Lomprayah Ferry and bus is a easy way to go to Koh Tao from Hua hin. I think Lomprayah has a combined bus and ferry from Hua Hin every day to Koh Tao. You leave Hua Hin in the evening and got to Chumphon in the early morning and connect with the Lomprayah ferry to Koh Tao. I believe that Lomprayah ferry has a ferry to Koh Koh Samui, Koh Phangan everyday from Koh Tao.
From Hua Hin to Chumphon is about 5-6 hours by bus and Ferry across to Koh Tao is about 2 hours and half. From Koh Tao to Samui in passing by Koh Phangan(stop over for 5 minutes) take about 2 1/2 hours. Then on the way back you can take a big ferry from Samui to Suratthani which will take about 2 hours. Many bus companies have a combined bus and ferry to Bangkok from Samui to Bangkok.
I did once 2 years ago. It was excellent.

Fastest and most relaxing way to samui would be:

Fly Hua Hin - Bangkok - Samui (If you get the timings right).

Can confirm playboy's post, have done it the way a number of times.

You'll leave HH at 8am, arrive in Chumphon at 12, ferry leaves at 13, arrives on KT at 14.30 - then onto Pha-ngan then Samui arriving at 16.30-17.00.

Flying maybe quicker but it'll be a a lot more expensive.

Additionally theres plenty of dive site info on the area here:

I'd have to agree with Jimmy on this one. If money is not the issue, the flight is about an hour and the trip from from HH to Bangkok is only a couple of hours with the new road. You could have a beer in HH at lunchtime and be supping your favourite tipple in Samui a couple of hours later!!!

If you go by bus take the Lomprayah combined bus-boat for one ticket about 1400 baht.
If you take the bus on your own to Chumpon you'll have to find your way to the boat pier which is out of town a few miles. I wouldn't know how to find it on my own plus you have no guarantee you'll get there in time for the boat.
You can buy Lomprayah tickets at pretty well any travel agency in HH and board the bus at the clock tower (Starbuck's). Get there a bit early so you can dash across P'kasem to the news stand and get an English-language newspaper (Nation, BKK Post or Herald Tribune).
