Re: 2023 F1 News and Prediction League
Well..... Not short of anything really!
Red BS and their illegal advantage (gained through overspending, use of Wind Tunnels etc) are there again, Mercedes looking somewhat better but the ambient temperature certainly told a story - Red BS struggling at low temp, but way up on Race Day with higher temps.... Tyre selection (and temp) as always a big issue. Ferrari did look good speed-wise, as did Aston. Great race from Norris also.
Have to feel sorry for several who went out - not so much for those who caused things!! Russel and Alonso very unlucky - Leclerc no.
Red BS are way too far ahead as was clearly shown with straight line speed even without DRS... Lot's to do for other teams!
As for the Prediction League, congrats to Parahandy on the Yellow Cap and extending his lead (have a word VS)....
. .
Next up after a month's break will be Azerbaijan - another "Street Circuit" and with the bigger cars, could certainly be interesting!!

Re: 2023 F1 News and Prediction League
Some new rules coming into effect this weekend; sprint being separate race and not affecting the starting order on Sunday. Does anybody know, when the predictions must be done? Friday, Saturday?

Re: 2023 F1 News and Prediction League
The reminder from Superbru has just answered my question:
F1 has today announced a fairly significant change to the format of race weekends that contain a sprint race, including this weekend's Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Summary: if a Grand Prix has a sprint race, qualifying will be on Friday. This means chance to pick pole, plus the Early Bru Point deadline, will be the start of qualifying on Friday.
Last season, a Grand Prix that included a sprint would see the outcome of a sprint race on a Saturday determine the grid for the main race on a Sunday. As a result, our Early Bru Point (EBP) pick deadline for predicting the driver who will start the race in pole position would be for the start of the sprint race, since the winner of the sprint would be awarded with Pole.
However, in a change for this season, F1 has announced that there will now be separate qualifying sessions for both the main race and the sprint, meaning they essentially take place independently from one another as races. A major reason behind this decision is so that drivers can attempt to be as successful in the sprint as possible without potentially jeopardising their chances in Sunday’s main race.
This news means that for this season, as we couldn’t anticipate this change ahead of the campaign, sprints are not something to consider when making your Superbru picks. The EBP deadline to select Pole will be the start of the main race qualifying session just as it would be for any Grand Prix that doesn’t feature a sprint race at all, though it's important to note that the qualifying session for the main race on weekends that include a sprint will be on Friday rather than Saturday.
If this new format proves to be successful and F1 choose to stick with the change for future seasons, we will adapt our game accordingly to include the ability to make some sprint predictions for the necessary Grand Prix weekends.
The first of 6 Grands Prix to include a Sprint in 2023 is this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Re: 2023 F1 News and Prediction League
Nice to see someone other than RED BS on Pole this season! Mercs struggling with speed and will have a tough time of it this weekend IMHO. Some hopeful signs from MClaren also (?)
"Ferrari's Charles Leclerc became the first non-Red Bull driver to take a pole position this year with a stunning lap at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Leclerc beat Red Bull's Max Verstappen by 0.188 seconds. Sergio Perez was third in the second Red Bull ahead of Leclerc's team-mate Carlos Sainz.
Lewis Hamilton took fifth ahead of Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso.
Hamilton's Mercedes team-mate George Russell failed to make it into the final session and will start 11th."

Re: 2023 F1 News and Prediction League
Well, it's been an interesting couple of days at Baku so far. Things were certainly looking up when Leclerc took Pole for both the Sprint and tomorrow's main race. Unfortunately, the Sprint has shown Red BS are still ahead on straightline speed. A couple of points which could make things interesting though - 1. The Scuderia may have a slight advantage in the lower speed corners and the "street type circuit" 2. Tyre degradation - evidence from the Sprint Race certainly points to the fact that tactics and tyre management/strategies are going to play a major part.......
