Re: New Makro store in Hua Hin will not be full service

As far as SA products go, here is a company that seems to make them (or at least sell them) in Thailand... maybe if the Makro (or Villa Market) manager thought they would sell they could stock them.

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Thanks for the link HHF, but I can make all that they offer, and probably for a fraction of the cost. The only reason I'm not doing the biltong right now is because we have a toddler loose on the premises, and as you no doubt know, the can't keep their hands off anything....lol.

Well I like it.

Worlds better than Tesco in the Mall in just about every way imaginable.
True, no toiletry section for toothpaste and the like . ..but just let me count the ways:

1. Easy plentiful parking. A major consideration now that the Mall is under reconstruction and descending into that hell of a parking garage is no longer something we will do.
2. Clean, brightly lit and spacious. So easy to maneuver carts up and down aisles.
3. Shopping carts that WORK not those wonky deals with three working wheels featured at Tesco.
4. Smiles !! Amazing. They found people who smile and chat. Security guard actually wheeled out a cart for me. Teller came and got me as I approached the checkout area.
5. Music and a minimum of upselling announcements. Nothing like the constant harried orders from the Tesco girls for people to take their breaks or whatever. . and the constant annoying ads.
6. Terrific vegetable & fruit section. . .and the meat/fish/ poultry area looked enormous. ( Even have several tanks of live fish! )
7. No bags. Seems like a negative at first but having them tally everything right in the cart then buying a couple of their heavy duty reusable bags is the way to go I am convinced after one try. I used to hate the constant plastic bagging and double bagging at Tesco.
8. Prices seemed OK. I dont pay much attention to them but my total was acceptable and I suspect lower than my usual Tesco tab.
9. Clean new bathrooms close by.
10. No waiting for a cashier. No lines.
11. Clear signs everywhere in English

I visited at around 9 last night. It may be busier in the daytime but still, they seem very well organized, the store is well designed and well stocked. I missed a couple of my favorite brands and time will tell if their supply system will prove as wonky as Tesco's . . invariably out of something I needed to buy.

So thats my take on it. You can have Tesco-Lotus or even the old HH "chopping mor" and welcome to them.

I must also add my praise for the new Makro. Though not full service like Pranburi, when it comes to food items they have so much its amazing to me. Tried to find a jar of Jalapeno peppers I formerly purchased at Villa (but don't have them now). This Makro had a whole section of Mexican foods with two different types of the peppers I wanted and a whole lot more that doesn't exist at Villa. Have heard from others that eat a lot of meat, their meat is as good as Villa. Certainly a very large counter for it there. All the positives mentioned above I do agree with. Nice to have 5-6 cashiers waiting to check you out unlike in Pranburi where you have to wait in line for the few on duty in a cramped space. Hope that feature lasts for a while. Been noticing that there seem to be note nearly as many mom and pop stores shopping there or maybe its because the aisles and the store is so large they get lost and don't pile up at the check out lines like in other Makro's I have been to.

Once the opening fever died down the parking is great at 11am in the morning to as I have been able to park up front every time I have visited now.

I agree with the last 2 posters, especially regarding the meat and fish. Vast improvement from Tesco. I would drive farther than the Tesco just to use the new Makro, and the fact that Makro is now only 5 minutes from me makes it a no brainer.
