Question to pet lovers - please help!

Post by latahu »

Dear Hua Hin pet lovers!
Our dog got very sick recently and the vet established it has happened due to the tick bites. It is a German Shepherd and he is long haired so it is very difficult to keep the ticks away. We have used a Front Line but only can find it for the dogs under 40 kg. May be it's not strong enough. He also is wearing the tick colar. But nothing seems to be working. If someone knows and can recommend the effective way to keep the ticks away and also an efficient and pet-friendly pest control service in Hua Hin.
Would be greatful for your adivise. Thanks

Welcome to the Forum latahu.

As your question is not really appropriate in the Introductions Forum, I have moved it to the Lifestyle and Family Forum.

I hope your question is answered.

I think your answer is go to the vet, there are various opininions about different vets. I used the one on the canal road by the traffic lights, the male vet in there is very good and should be able to help. He was always very helpful and good when I dealt with him.
Woke up this morning breathing that's a good start to the day.

Yes the ticks are really bad at the moment. You should get your dog injected with the 'parasite injection' at your vets about 150/200 baht.. this will also protect him from heartworm.. he must have this every 2 months. Will not stop the ticks altogether but will definitely help..
Also try and avoid exercising him around livestock.
When you shampoo him use a tick and flea prevention shampoo and if you take him down to the beach .. sea water is good for parasite prevention.
Just watch out for the jellyfish!!
If you find a tick you must be careful how you remove it.. make sure you get as close to the dogs skin as possible ensuring you remove the head of the tick.. then with a pair of tweezers turn the tick anti clockwise and gently remove it. Do not grab its body as you will squeeze the contents of its stomach back into the dog and cause infection. Once removed if area is bleeding .. i usually just give the skin a little dusting of Banacin (anti biotic powder you can buy from most chemists) to prevent infection. Other than this i dont really think there is much else you can do.
You can usually tell if your dog has got a tick as they will tend to go very listless and have no energy. It can make them very sick if you're not careful.
The ticks over here are a real problem. Hope this helps you and good luck..

Yes, skin conditions are really horrendous over here. Some dogs seem more prone to mange and parasites than others??
A lot of these skin conditions can be treated.. i have heard many people say that it would be kinder to put these animals to sleep.. i dont agree - if treated you would be surprised that in just 4 to 6 weeks a big difference can be made. if you see a dog like this you can easily get powders (very cheap) from the vets and put in food once a week. Very often the fur doesnt come back but at least the dog is a lot happier and not scratching its skin down to the bone!!
I have treated many dogs worse than the one in the picture and after a few weeks you will be pleasantly surprised at the difference you can make.

OP

You need to keep on with the frontline. Even though it may appear as though it's not working, it is. Any ticks on the dog don't die immediately, and you also have to remember that there are probably hundreds of thousands of eggs already on your property. One female tick can lay as many as 20,000 eggs in a batch.

Believe me, our place was infested, partly because my wife felt like inviting a stray in for dinner, and partly because my Dalmation always manages to find a way out the property. Not too long ago it looked as though the one outside wall of the house was moving because of all the baby ticks on it. Even now, I am in the middle of a fierce battle with the buggers. Both dogs are getting frontline once each month, they get shampooed with tick and flea killer, and they get covered in tick and flea powder almost daily. I also sprinkle powder along the base of the house and over all the areas where the dogs lie. After keep at this for a few weeks now, the ticks seem to be few and far between but I'm not giving up until they're gone completely.

When I stayed in Takiap the vet gave frontline and an injection and within a month I never saw another tick.

Strange but true.....I have a goat on the property and even when we had so many ticks about, I have never managed to find a single tick on her. Hundreds on the dogs but not even one stray tick on the goat.

PS: Dawn and her mum used to get the pest people in to treat the inside and outside of their home so I imagine most of the pest control companies can do it. I'm considering getting them in as well, but more for the sake of controlling mosquitoes.....if that's possible.
Don't try to impress me with your manner of dress cos a monkey himself is a monkey no less - cold fact

At a different house here in California we had a bad flea and tick problem. A pest control company sprayed a few times and that solved it!

Ticks

Post by Sealcat »

Hi Iatahu... we have 3 dogs, 2 Danes and a Lab and had ticks here when we first moved to HH.... but we have had the grounds sprayed once a month for snakes and now do not have a tick problem... nor ants either. If you want the details of the company, pm me and I will reply. It costs around 6,000bht per year.
