Snake in Town
We were returning from Hua Hin Market Village yesterday, headed up Chomsin Rd,towards the big Roundabout, over Railway line, then stopped at the Medium sized supermarket on the left hand side,i ducked in for some beer,on returning to our car,my wife was calling out snake snake,i looked down and under a thai lads food cart was a cobra about a mtre and a half long, fairly fat th thai lad was attacking its head with a steel post, game over,he quickly scooped it up placed it into a plastic bag.
My wife seems to think it may have got up under his food cart, where he leaves it at night.
Then last night noticed two small cobras dead on the road heading up to Hin Lek Fai.
Being new to this area, was wondering is this normal for Cobras to be about at this time of year,or are they on the move all year round?

Re: Snake in Town
Have not seen any for months until recently there are a lot squashed on the road. Rain activates mang mao, mang mao activate frogs and toads, frogs and toads activate snakes.

A friend who also lives near that area says they have had Cobras in the garden. The restuarant on Hin Lek Fai Road has had a snake in the pool, but not a cobra! I shall be on the look out I want to buy one of those snake handling rods as posted in another post.

Re: Snake in Town
Yes seem to be a lot of cobra's around at the moment but most seem to be fairly small. Had two in the garden recently.
Re: Snake in Town
Some cheerful news
I just read this:
It’s mating season now for a lot of snakes in Thailand. The eggs and young start to arrive about April-May, and into June-July timeframe.
That means some snakes are on the move to find a mate and you may find them outside more often than other times, but definitely not more than you would find them in the middle of July after or during a rain.
Comforting thought!

Good link. I think the big thing is to remember...if you are unfortunate enough to be bitten by a snake...do not take time to look it up...go straight to hospital Apparently some dangerous snake bites only give you 10 mins! It is good to do research and find out what is about and their habits.
Re: Snake in Town
^ You not only need to look at it (for identification), you need to kill and take it with you if possible as the anti venom is different for different types of snakes.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
Re: Snake in Town
Pretty basic first aid but.
Broad bandage the whole limb quite firmly, to reduce the speed of the lymph system carrying the venom; and keep as calm as possible, to avoid raising pulse rate.
This should give ample time to reach a hospital around here.
I think after being bitten, racing around trying to kill the snake; should be avoided in my humble opinion.
Leave that to someone else.
God knows Aussie land has some of the deadliest in the world; and way longer distances, and time, to reach a hospital.
Yet anyone dying from a snake bite, is exceptionally rare now-a-days, in Aussie land at least.

If I got bit on say the ankle I would secure a belt as tight as I could get it and try and get a picture with my phone.

If you look at the web Siani gave it says do NOT tie any bandage etc too tight.

Good idea phone, most people have phone cameras handy...just hope we don't have to use themPET wrote:kendo wrote:If I got bit on say the ankle I would secure a belt as tight as I could get it and try and get a picture with my phone.

I do not think a lot of people get bitten here. Best to be on the lookout though. Especially as they have been seen around HH lately, also the rain etc.
I lived in Queensland for years, only ever saw one snake, that was on the road. We were more afraid of spiders there...we do not seeem to see any spiders here...maybe the snakes have them first!
Re: Snake in Town
I'd been visiting Thailand for over 20 years, and thought the same. However, during our last visit we had 2 unwelcome venomous visitors in the house. The first one had big (for a spider) blue eyes, and the 2nd was red and black stripes/hoops.Siani wrote:...we do not seeem to see any spiders here...maybe the snakes have them first!
The locals assured us both were venomous, and destroyed them for us. I looked them both up via Google, and it confirmed they were venomous, but did not normally bite humans. Scared the hell out of me though.

We get quite a lot of these red bugs, well look like bugs, bright red. They sometimes piggy back on the pathway. Look dangerous, not sure if they are. They sometimes come in the house too Ssssssnake food!Big Boy wrote:I'd been visiting Thailand for over 20 years, and thought the same.
