Size wise I’d say they are similar to a house sparrow or slightly bigger.
There's a couple different species, but it's a 'weaver' ... I think
Maybe .. Baya Weaver - Ploceus philippinus
https://ebird.org/species/baywea1

Will be building something along these lines

It’s either as you’ve suggested or something related. It’s still in the early stages of nest building but so far it could easily qualify for the Engineering thread, as I’ve never seen any nest as intricate- I’ll be posting photos on a daily basis!!

That does look closer - they seem to be quite timid so as soon as I try to get closer for a better photo they fly off, but I’ll keep trying.

I’ve looked further and it’s definitely the Asian Golden Weaver, the giveaway is how they build their nests and this is what they look like after 2-3 days - I’ll update daily, but I’ve never seen anything so intricate!!Image

Yes, as I've watched them build/weave their nest. Skillful, and some leave hole in the bottom for entry/exit

I have more than a few snaps & vids of them. As suggested, could be a different weaver, as 3 different species here, and all can be spotted in our area:

Asian golden weaver, Ploceus hypoxanthus
Baya weaver, Ploceus philippinus
Streaked weaver, Ploceus manyar (haven't seen this one yet, I don't think)
https://www.thainationalparks.com/list- ... f-thailand

One of the vids, at the end, it flies up through the bottom hole

Thanks for the update but I’m fairly certain it isn’t the Streaked Weaver.

Birds of Thailand

Post by Dannie Boy »

I managed to get a photo this morning which makes me more certain that it’s the Golden Weaver Image
They obviously take great pride in their nest building as progress is quite slow but very methodical - clearly their name derives from their weaving skills!!Image

Look up weaver birds in Sud Ferica, Namibia and Botswana. They make whole condominiums!

Another 24 hour’s construction and a lower chamber now becoming evident. Image

What’s noticeable and equally amazing as the whole thing, the newest part of the construction looks to be 100% grass, whereas the original was I think mainly shredded coconut fronds, so they know to select different materials for different sections!!

The entrance to the nest is getting smaller and at the same time, the detail in the construction seems a little less intricate than at the earlier stages - still amazing though!!Image
