They didn't, the epic immigration queues have always been a problem when flying into Thailand, just more so during peak periods.

But I don’t think they were twice as bad as they are now? I’ve always found it hit and miss - sometimes I’ve got through literally in 10 minutes other times over an hour but unless my memory is deceiving me, I’m sure I’ve had more quick ones than slow ones!!

The problem with that is: by the time the appointment comes around, you have forgotten what it was for!

I arrived in Suvarnabhumi at 5:45pm on Tuesday and after quickly walking the 800m to immigration control, there were no queues at all. I had enough time to catch the bus to Hua Hin at 6:30pm, which had about 10 people on it.

BA to start flights from Gatwick to Bangkok in October

"The return of services to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur were also detailed, with flights restarting from Gatwick to the Thai capital in October and a daily service from Heathrow to Malaysia's capital commencing in November."

Pity it will only be 3 times a week but it might help in keeping airfares in check - traditionally BA were always the cheapest of the three direct route operators between LHR and BKK (plus Thai and EVA), although I’m not a great fan of their service and many of their planes are very old.

The flight to Bkk from Gatwick seems a downgrade from previous daily flights from LHR to Bkk. Instead, daily flights to KL will fly from LHR. Thats quite a change from before. I wonder what's behind that decision?

There are some cheap flights to London from KL in summer on Malaysian Airlines. Methinks Bangkok is pricing itself out of the market.

This article suggests it’s due to profitability and that the LHR-BKK route wasn’t making sufficient profit pre-Covid days!!

^ Didn't British Airways used to fly Gatwick-Bangkok in the past as well as from Heathrow?
I remember that some years ago I spent several hours in The Wetherspoons pub in Crawley while in transit back to Luxembourg and I think it was after a BA flight from Bangkok.

This link provides a bit more information including the flight schedule and pricing - starting from £699 in economy but we’ll over £3k for BC
