Tablet Recommendations Spec, Price, Quality

Post by kendo »

My stepson has just asked me to buy him a tablet for his continuing study's. I wish he had asked me a couple of weeks ago when we were in Hua Hin and Bangkok and i would have given him my Ipad mini that is not my most favorite gadget at the moment. :D Or i would have purchased a shiny new one when in Market Village.

What i am asking for is the best value quality tablet, prices, specifications and the dodgy one's to avoid it will have to also have a bona -fide warranty . It must obviously support Thai and English language as well.

The prices in Hua Hin are they really much different to the prices in Pantip Plaza Bangkok.

Thanks in advance :thumb:

Does anyone really see benefits in Tablets, other than being a reading/viewing tool they can't compare to a lap top.

I find them very convenient for quick access to the internet and for day to day stuff like booking air tickets and internet banking. I spend a lot of time in a hotel room and to use the lap top, I have to get it out of it's case, plug it in, boot it up, wait for Windows to update and all that whereas the tablet just goes as soon as you turn it on. I only bought it for travelling but I find that I use it nearly all the time now.
I only have a cheap Acer that cost about 140 GBP but it still has 3g access, WiFi etc. And being Android, you can use a memory stick in it for all your documents and stuff.

So you don't have to take the tablet out of a cover or bag, don't have to turn it on, windows doesn't update every time the computer is turned on, one can book a flight on a smart phone and also if screen is big enough access attachments to emails, but just like a tablet can't really work with them.
Apart from the difficulty of using one or two finger typing, can you easily work on spread sheets or charts or anything complex?
I also travel extensively and hate it, I also hate carrying a lap top but find it is the only way to work

Back to the ops question, Just like Kendo I have an Acer Tablet 10.5inch screen, quite adequate for reading emails and answering simple ones, good for Facebook and viewing photos and good for reading when travelling.

He had a really nice lap top that cost us £600 it was only two years old before it got stolen from his rented room.

At least with a tablet it's a lot more easy to carry everywhere with you.

When I learned that Tablets were to be on the market I could not see the point of them. However I find the IPad, mini invaluable for the reasons Steve G mentions. But I do require a lap top for more complex things. But that's no bad thing as I like to keep 1 machine purely for banking, trading etc. Tablet sales are falling though due to smart phones with larger screens. Back to topic---- I prefer Apple's IPad ,their customer service is superb.

Work is a different thing. I only do that at work when they're paying me, on their computer!

On the subject of actually buying a tablet, try to actually go and see them in the flesh and don't just rely on specifications and reviews. The reason I mention that is because I did some research on the net but before ordering, I went along to an electronic shop to have a look and the Acer at that time had a much more vibrant screen despite not being that highly rated.
IPads look nice but at a cost, a 3g iPad was three times more expensive than a 3g Acer and it had no USB access which must be a real pain.

I have a Windows tablet that was given to me by Dell when I bought an ultrabook. As far as Windows tablets go, don't bother. That OS still doesn't work well on tablets or phones imo. Go with an Ipad or an Android. I'm trying to figure out if I can turn mine into an Android tablet.

Before coming over this year I purchased an adaptor that was supposed to support a USB for watching movies it didn't work. Maybe ok for just downloading photos or images.
I should have looked on Utube first and I wouldn't have wasted my money.

If the lad wants a tablet I will get him one its just about spending my hard earnt dough in a wise manner.

I am on my 5th Ipad and 3rd Iphone... Apple products just work well, they vet all apps before they will allow them into the app store.. Upgrades and new purchases are simple and automated... I have equipped the entire family with them with hand-me-downs from both my wife and I.... Facetime is a huge hit with the family, keeping touch with each other as we travel around... Yes I have a laptop for the real heavy lifting but I rarely use it.. MAinly for my slingbox viewing while in Hua Hin, which is awesome... I use my ipad for 95% of all my daily online use.... The Icloud is awesome for backups and photo sharing/storage....

The Ipad has only been in existence for 5 years, and the Iphone about 7 years. The fact that you've seen the need to change the pad every year and the phone about every 2 years is not exactly a ringing endorsement.

I rate the value of anything by how long I can use it before I have to get a new one. :|

M iPad is 3.1/2 years old and works like a donkey, it's forever closing the app I'm using (particularly when using this forum) and the battery doesn't last half as long as it used to, even a year ago. I suspect some form of built in obsolescence by Apple wanting me to buy a new one.
Regarding the argument over Tablet vs Laptop, it's largely down to what you use them for - when I was working I needed a laptop for writing Word documents, spreadsheets, power point etc. Now that I'm retired, I rarely need to use any of these programs so the (misbehaving) iPad is good for 95% of the time.
