Although the following is about aircraft, the technology has wide applications:

Clearing the air: aircraft propulsion alternatives

What becomes of aviation in a world committed to carbon neutrality? The answer might not be as grim as it seems, with new technologies and fuels rapidly developing

The burning issue

You only had to pick up a newspaper this week, to know that fossil fuel’s ‘Berlin Wall’ had finally collapsed. Andrew Forrest, October 2021

Powered flight and the internal combustion engine are contemporaries, like cousins. The petrol engine’s combination of high power and light weight made the seemingly miraculous act of heavier-than-air flight possible in a way that the steam engines powering Felix du Temple’s 1874 monoplane and Clement Ader’s bat-like 1890 Éole aircraft could not.

But every aircraft piston engine since the Wright brothers’ self-developed powerplant for the 1903 Flyer I, and every gas turbine since Frank Whittle’s barely controllable bench test model of 1937, has added something to the Earth’s atmosphere: carbon dioxide (CO2), a gas once thought of as benign, since it is only toxic to human beings at high concentrations, but a proven major contributor to the sudden warming of the Earth’s climate.

While aviation is not the largest contributor to increased CO2 levels, it is among the fastest growing CO2 sources.

How far gaming tech has come! I used to play Road Rash on the mega drive (could be the master system actually). Somewhat different. 😂

A bold and optimistic vision from Saudi Arabia. Some are estimating costs at $1 trillion. Petty cool if it goes ahead though. 2030 for it to be reality? We'll see.

How horrible. I've seen smaller versions turn into slums very quickly. It happens time after time.

Lol, I actually thought of the slums in Ready Player One when I first saw it. People stacked on top of people.

But with our ever growing population, it'd be nice if 'affordable', good for the environment, livable communities like this became a thing. We can only hope.

If any country can do it, it’s Saudi Arabia with their vast fortunes from oil sales.

I like the one on the top left, hanging off the edge. Make sure there aren't too many people in that end at the same time or we'll be looking at Rama 2 redux.

I believe that there are a couple of posters on here that work on ships, and for anyone else interested in modern marine engineering, this vessel is quite unique with its multi-functional scientific systems.

Its basic ships systems follow the modern trend of diesel electric propulsion, with variable speed reversable electric motors driving fixed pitch propellors. A retractable bow thruster is also employed. A Kongsberg dynamic positioning system provides for station keeping if required.
