,
In ten years or less Soi Bintabaht* and the surroundings will be another Benidorm concrete jungle.
So enjoy it while you can. It won't last. Soi Hoi will turn into Soi Boutique.

* I am told by an extremely wise man that it means: "The alms-giving lane"

Some come to Thailand for prostitution, some in spite of it. And some come to pass judgement on all others.

I recall secondary school teachers observing that the pupils who are the most overtly homophobic are usually homosexual themselves, but have yet to come to terms with it.

When grown men visiting a foreign country rail about the prostitution there, I find myself wondering, - why?

Are they evangelical religious missionaries, determined to stick their nose in where it's not wanted? - or are they convinced that the girls are working against their will? - or is the red light district on the only route to somewhere important...?

...or do they have a guilty little secret??

I like the atmosphere of Soi Binterbart. Although i have never taken any girls down there it is still good fun. I have a long term girlfriend and she would chop bits off me if i did...
I must take my camera down there one day to snap some pics for prosperity.... :D

I think that is what Soi Bintabaht means. I am pretty sure that the word bintabaht simply means 'alms giving.' for example, when my wife's nephews were ordained as novice monks and the family went to give them their first alms, the act was described as 'bintabaht.'

I thought it was just the Thai mispelling of "bints for baht".

Sometimes when i went to make tambun in the temple te word Bintabaht is mentioned by the leading monk in several different kathas. It is in my opinonon a way to share part of your fortune to others. In other religions it is cald give a tent or likewise.

BTW: to SBJ i like your joke "bints for baht"

shakin' boxcar joe wrote:The Bintabaht area as it is now is an eyesore, some of those girls really should have bags over their heads .Having an area like that devoted to prostitution and alcohol so near the temple is offensive to a lot of locals , and should be re located. I am all for zoning of areas like that away from downtown areas , especially when locals, many of whom are of a conservative nature, are already starting to complain that the influx of boozed up falangs with tawdry rent-a-wives is starting to change the whole nature of the town.

Whether the replacement of ramshackle and rundown bars with tailor shops ,7.11s and more Italian restaurants will be any less of an eyesore remains to be seen.

But, as often happens in Thailand, nothing will be done and life will carry on much rhe same as before. Falangs will rent their wives, locals will grumble, the monks will carry on praying and the tills will keep a chinging.

Some good duelin' from the buksida crew versus the Boxcar boys! :P
I'm pretty much on the fence with both arguments for and against.

BUT what about if Bintaban stays the same while the Canal road zone becomes as developed as Bintaban! Now theres a vision for the eyes!

Bintabaht cant stay the same .

When the leases run out the rents will go up and those shoestring tycoons will have to pay up or ship out.

My guess is they will gradually ship out and that street will gradually become home to more upmarket business operations.

There will always be a market for a bar scene , hopefully it will be run by owners who can provide more for their customers than most of the shabby bars are providing at the moment.

I understand that the owners dont want to pour vast amounts of money into their businesses because of the uncertainty of the lease situation and the spectre of huge rent increases , but that doesnt change the fact that most of those hole in the wall bars are just that.... holes in the wall.

SBJ,

For my sake and no doubt others, can you please define what you regard as "more upmarket business operations"???

More crap faceless could be anywhere concrete developments selling the usual designer clothes and gear? Bars that charge 130b for a beer?

Its a narrow strip of land, what exactly can be done that will pander to your aesthetic tastes?

What exactly do you have in mind??!!

Seems like you're in the wrong place?

When I were a lad we never 'ad these posh looking 'bars', we used to get see sip rocket fuel off the man with the barrow, then these farang with money came along and ruined the place - opened 'bars' and installed 'toilets', when we were quite happy using the street to urinate and defecate in. Ah them were the days, the beer tasted so much better then. then we'd go home to our cardboard box in t' middle o' road....Oh, you were lucky....cardboard box! we used to live in 'ole in 't road.........etc etc.
shakin' boxcar joe - you are arguing one of the most ridiculous corners that I think I have ever seen on here, and i imagine you will be the first who is up in arms when all those 'historic' buildings in Soi Binthabaht are knocked down and replaced with the type of shopping street that is ten a penny in Europe and the States. I think the biggest monstrosity on that street is the big ugly hotel that is being built, not the cosy 'hole in the wall' bars - at least they have a bit of atmosphere and character. Inevitably they will disappear because of the leases and rents but I'll guarantee there won't be as many people walking up and down that soi once they go. The boutiques and up market shops that replace them will be more ugly and as empty as all the tailors shops normally are. And there will be a knock on effect - the Hilton will be half empty most nights, because the girls won't be there, thus the men won't be either. Come to think of it thats good news!
