It probably depends upon who is holding the tape measure. Our local 7-11 doesn't sell alcohol for that reason.

[Edit] Actually, it did sell alcohol, but closed and moved 2 doors up the road - no longer allowed.

Credit, where credit is due

Before I tell my good news story, a little note to explain my actions. I have a piggy bank, and when I'm out, I'm passionate about collecting coins to feed him   . If tipping, I take the coins, and will only tip with notes - just an odd passion :D

Another story........... Since moving to Thailand, there is only one antiperspirant that is effective on me - Nivea Silver Protect, which I regularly purchase from Tesco @ 161 Baht. They've been out of stock for a week, so not wanting to inflict B.O. on the world, it was time to look elsewhere. A route was planned - Tops, then Villa Market.

Into Tops - firstly a word of warning. A sign has been erected on Petchkasem road side of the car park, and the support legs are in 2 car parking spaces. This is exactly the same scenario as me mashing my rear bumper a few weeks ago. I actually parked in the next bay, but would not have seen/expected the obstructions in a car parking bay, and would have mashed my bumper again - you have been warned.

Now the good news........... I found what I was looking for - still 161 Baht, so put 2 into my basket. I got to the checkout, and was charged 326 Baht - that meant my pig was being deprived of 4 Baht!!

I told Mrs BB to wait with my shopping whilst I made sure I hadn't made a mistake. No, there it was - in bold black figures 161. I sent Mrs BB to the Customer Service Desk to reclaim my pig's 4 Baht. Of course, the girl didn't believe the computer could be wrong, and I had to accompany her to the shelf. It still said 161.

Back to the Customer Service Desk and she pulled out this huge form, and started filling it in. I'm thinking, FFS all of this effort for 4 Baht, even if it is for my pig. Form completed, she pulls out a big bag of money, and counts out 165 Baht, and hands it to me  5 Baht for my pig and 160 Baht for me :D .

It seems their pricing policy is the same as Tesco used to be in the UK. If the item is charged incorrectly at the checkout, you get the item (restricted to one piece) free and the overcharged amount back. 10/10 for their integrity - first time I've experienced it in Thailand.

You do realise that the big bag of money has been collected from people being overcharged and not realising it?

Talking about piggy banks....
Just like you I have been emptying pockets pockets for years into a very big jar.
A year back I promised my daughter the content of the jar, if she got her grades above 3 in average.
She did it...!! So a lot of counting and bagging started.
The Baguette took it all.
Total amount: 33.700 baht.......!!!

I believe Big C has same policy, at least one in Udon Thani does.

Wrong price on a bottle of Olive Oil, and not even close, full vs sale price, apparently wasn't entered into computer. Quite surprised and happy she refunded full price, along with handing me the product.

Fair play to Big C as well :D I've never knowingly been overcharged by them, so an even better testimonial

Is this the same person that though it was fine for street vendor bandits to charge a grand for a grilled shrimp? :duck:

I didn't say it was OK, I simply asked for a definition of 'bandit', which you duly gave

Seriously, this is the first pro-active attempt at customer service that I've experienced in Thailand, and I have been impressed. Try querying an incorrect price in Tesco. Starving pig or not, you'd only query it once unless you're a glutton for punishment.

Same at Makro - on one occasion they had their milk displayed at a lower price than I was charged at the till - they investigated and told me the display was wrong and I would have to pay the “computer” price - out of principle I told them to keep their milk and I bought elsewhere

Only last week at Makro, at the check-out the girl looked at the chicken wings then walked off with them. When I asked my wife what the problem was, she told me that the check-out girl said there was a promotion and hadn't been taken into account on the scales at the meat counter. She could have charged me the barcoded price and I'd have not been any wiser.

Well I have used Mitsubishi in Cha Am now for three years and they are very service minded. I have had a couple of check-ups before driving longer trips, and this has been in between services. They have done it for free. During last service they wanted to replace the battery. I pointed out it was replaced by them less than a year ago. The replaced it free of charge even though there were no warranty for the old battery.

Tops overcharged me for an item, and my experience was nothing like yours. They voided the sale, asked me to take all items out of the bags and reran the whole lot through the till with an applied discount so I'd get the correct price on the wrong item. Extremely annoying. I get better service in Tesco when they screw something up.

When I was in TOPS the checkout girl seemed confused counting out the change and gave me 200 baht extra. Pointed it out and got a big smile when I handed it back.

Resurrecting an old thread!

TOPS still disappoints compared to their range of farang foods in Bangkok, including Stobbarts Pork Pies. And when I went there yesterday, they were out of stock of Waitrose Bran Flakes, which was annoying, but this post is mainly to do with whats outside the store.

In the front car park, on Petch Road, they have built a new wine store in a separate building. Not sure how long it has been there, but it's a big change to them not selling alcohol at all, because of the proximity of the school. I noticed it's open from 10 - 10, but I assume they can't sell alcohol for all those hours. But as TOPS is owned by one of the 'elite' families, who knows?

Inside the main store, the electircal equipment has now been shunted into half of the the space it used to occupy at the back of the store. It seems the rest, towards the front, will be a mish-mash of household stuff, toys and whatever. New shelving is up and pretty full of stuff, but wasn't accessible when I was there.
