Hua Hin airport due for upgrade
Re: Hua Hin airport due for upgrade
"expanded by up to 45 metres"....
They can't mean runway length as that would accomplish just about nothing. Perhaps width for wider bodied aircraft?

The above from a "property website": In August 2018, The Department of Airport announced that 3.5 billions THB would be invested during the 5 next years to “enlarge the passenger terminal and widen the runway and expend hangars” of the Hua Hin’s airport. The Hua Hin Today’s journalists have recently interviewed the airport Director for 25 years, Mr. Apasit Ubolkomut, to make him inform us of the progression of the project. In August 2018, The Department of Airport announced that 3.5 billions THB would be invested during the 5 next years to “enlarge the passenger terminal and widen the runway and expend hangars” of the Hua Hin’s airport. The Hua Hin Today’s journalists have recently interviewed the airport Director for 25 years, Mr. Apasit Ubolkomut, to make him inform us of the progression of the project.
The ongoing projects
According to him, the terminal will be doubled in size to separate the domestics and international passengers which is “vital for security, customs and immigration”. The runway will be made wider from the existing 35 m to 45 m wide along with additional aircraft tarmac ‘parking’ facilities to allow more aircraft to come and to facilitate their take-off. However, the Director precise that the runway should be elongated by 500 m to allow long haul carrier to operate from Hua Hin, which is possible with an extension seaward but not scheduled already.

I also found this article that does suggest the length of the runway being extended by 45 metres - I assume this must be critical to get other larger aircraft to be able to land/take off

Yes, I have seen that also. It is BS!Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2020 12:18 pm I also found this article that does suggest the length of the runway being extended by 45 metres - I assume this must be critical to get other larger aircraft to be able to land/take off

Re: Hua Hin airport due for upgrade
There are multiple sites about this upgrade. Many of them say that the width will be increased from 35m to 45m. Maybe somethings lost in translation.

The follow shows the "ideal" conditions and runway length required for various aircraft:
(Hua Hin is 2,100 metres, 6,900 ft)

Re: Hua Hin airport due for upgrade
So an extension of 500 metres as suggested would cover all of those.
Re: Hua Hin airport due for upgrade
We'll all be talking about this same "planned expansion" a year or two from now.

The length is very often not the limiting factor:

Hua Hin: Asphaltic concrete

Re: Hua Hin airport due for upgrade
I only go to HH for holidays so therefore I am not as well informed as some other BMs. However, one thing I have noticed whilst sitting on the beach close to the Hilton for the past couple of years, I never see or hear any flights using Hua Hin airport.
So I checked out flightradar24 and it appears that AK830 and 831 seem to always land towards the sea and depart towards the land, one direction must have a tailwind?
Is it because aviation is not allowed to overfly the boat restricted area close by?

^^ The palace.
Re: Hua Hin airport due for upgrade
No, as far as I am aware there is no restriction over the water, just the palace. For a big percentage of the year, such as presently, the prevailing wind is from the east, so there is more likely a cross wind component rather than any tail wind, or head wind for that matter.Gus wrote:So I checked out flightradar24 and it appears that AK830 and 831 seem to always land towards the sea and depart towards the land, one direction must have a tailwind?

Re: Hua Hin airport due for upgrade
Last time I flew into Hua Hin, we flew right up the coast, passing the Palace etc, did a big loop just past Cha-Am, and came in overland.

I often see the incoming flight from KL pass close to overhead of us in Cha Am heading towards the airport - it might not always take this route, but it does on many an occasion
