Bi-turbo motor of 488 Pista and F8 Tributo takes top honours, followed by Jaguar's all-electric system and AMG's V8.
Ferrari’s twin-turbo V8 powerhouse has proved its dominance again by being named the 2019 International Engine and Powertrain of the Year winner.

This is the fourth consecutive year the maker of one of Italy’s most renowned sports car marque has been awarded the annual title, judged by 70 motoring journalists from 31 countries around the globe.

The 3.9-litre eight-cylinder unit has first been used in the 488 GTB and Pista mid-engined supercars. Its power peaked at 720hp in the Pista and will feature in the 488-replacing F8 Tributo, which premiered in Geneva last March and has yet to be launched in Thailand.

Like in previous years, the motor has been recognised for managing to yield sledgehammer performance and intoxicating aural thrills. It isn’t exactly the same V8 as used in the Portofino and GTC4 Lusso T, which produce less power and has different engine calibrations.

Coming in second place was Jaguar’s battery-electric powertrain indicating how quick the new-age technology is being accepted in the world of tightening CO2 emissions.

The all-electric system is first used in the I-Pace and has these headline figures: 400hp of power, near-500km of driving range and sub-5sec 0-100kph acceleration time. Earlier this year, the I-Pace was crowned 2019 European Car of the Year, another prestigious award assessed purely by the car media without any backing from the industry.

The last podium finish went to the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 used in various Mercedes-AMG and Aston Martin models. The ‘hot-vee’ powerplant, whose blowers are neatly tucked in between the cylinder banks for better engine response, is currently in its most potent form in the Mercedes-AMG E63S 4Matic+ producing 612hp.

The points tally for the top three finishers was 425, 328 and 280.

To facilitate contemporary trends of engine-downsizing, turbocharging and electrification, this year’s sub-awards are based on power strata and not displacement anymore. The Green Engine class has also been divided into Electric and Hybrid categories.

The other winners are as follows, with no diesel engines making the cut.

New: battery-electric (Jaguar)
Performance: 3.9-litre V8 (Ferrari)
Electric: battery-electric (Jaguar)
Hybrid: 1.5-litre inline-3 (BMW)
