What If?

Post by pharvey »

Obviously, throughout history, there have been instances/huge influences on "future history".....

What would the effect have been for example: -

Hitler/Germany had the Atomic Bomb?
The Titanic didn't sink? Who was on board who could have made a big difference to the world as we know?
We/The USA didn't reach the moon?
Britain did not colonise the countries that they did........?

Could go on and on and on, but just as a start, let's go with the question RE: The Titanic above? If there are any other preferred suggestions, please feel free!

In the case of Titanic sinking it led to many changes in maritime rules and regulations, many that shipowners would not have implemented because of increased costs.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changes_i ... MS_Titanic
Following the Titanic disaster, ships were refitted for increased safety. For example, the double bottoms of many existing ships, including the RMS Olympic,[5] were extended up the sides of their hulls, their waterlines, to give them double hulls. Another refit that many ships underwent were changes to the height of the bulkheads. The bulkheads on Titanic extended 10 feet (3 m) above the water line. After the Titanic sank, the bulkheads on other ships were extended higher to make the compartments fully watertight.

The Titanic disaster led to the convening of the first International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) in London, on 12 November 1913. On 30 January 1914, a treaty was signed by the conference that resulted in the formation and international funding of the International Ice Patrol, an agency of the United States Coast Guard that to the present day monitors and reports on the location of North Atlantic Ocean icebergs that could pose a threat to transatlantic sea traffic.
There were many other improvements that may have been made eventually, but were forced on to shipowners as direct result of the sinking.

Well, Brexit hasn't gone any way has it? So pretty much a non - "What if" is it.

[EDIT] No offence sateeb - simply meaning we're neither there or... well, there!

Must admit Nereus, I was looking at another side - i.e. people/engineers/inventors surviving and having an influence on the future, but you make a very good point - how long would it have taken for the safety to be implemented. What effect did that have - how many lives (and who's) were saved?

That's a huge one. Good, bad or ugly, it's nature.

The question was if the referendum had gone the other way. If that was the case then the pound wouldn't be in the state it's in now.

Things are in such a bad way because of the uncertainty. Nobody really knows which way it will go.

Mosquitos are part of a food chain. However, the loss of them could well be filled by other insects in time.

There are 3,500 species of mozzy and only 100 species are a problem. Just get rid of those!!

OK, fair enough. Don't want to argue the "Brexit" point as there's another thread on that - "Brexit" has still not been decided. BUT if there was never the referendum where would the Conservatives, Labour and the "Brexit Party" etc. be..... not to mention the pound?

TBO I was not sure just what you had in mind? There were several well known people lost, maybe Millionaire John Jacob Astoras he was also known as an inventor.
Millionaire John Jacob Astor was a member of the prominent Astor family and helped build the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City. He was also an inventor, a science fiction novelist, and served in the Spanish-American War.

What about the assassination of Austria's Archduke Ferdinand? If this hadn't happened, would it have saved millions? Or was war inevitable?
