Dress Code For Immigration

Post by Big Boy »

I wasn't sure whether to start a new thread, or put this in to News of the Weird. Ministry of Silly Ideas at their best.

Why don't they get us all to wear prison jump suits? Will they have sarongs for hire outside?

I can’t understand why a man in a pair of long shorts as in the photo could be considered unsuitable - I accept that I’ve seen some rather scantily dressed women at Immigration that even I have thought inappropriate.

For me, it's not the dress code - I guess we've all got long trousers that we can wear, it's just one more control measure over Farangs.

Immigration is no more than a police station. Will Thais visiting a police station be subjected to the same controls?

The OP posted a sign from Jomtien... Is a long pants rule being unforced in Hua Hin also?

I think I learned over 50 years ago it is wise to be presentable at an interview. ( and polite) However that makes absolutely no difference at Bangkok immigration.

I visited Hua Hin Immigration about 2 months ago.

I decided I should wear a shirt with collar to show ‘respect’, but it was a hot day and I decided on a T shirt.

I should have not given it a second thought, about a third of the male customers wore singlets, some looking as though they needed a wash (and for a few, not just the singlet).

Dress codes seemed irrelevant; we were all treated with friendly smiles and efficiency.

From what I see what farang are wearing, I would send away some entering in a coffee shop or in a shopping mall.
There is no problem to visit an immigration with a short or T-shirt, but there are differences between a city short or a jogging or football player short, same for T-shirts .

This has to be a first to agree with EURO.
I have spent most of my life living in 'so called' 3rd world countries and without exception I have given respect to Immigration, Police and Customs Depts' - there is a hidden danger,so be polite and dress smart, is the way forward when you go to see them. I cringe here when I see singlets but I believe it isl a lack of respect when you are the visitor to their country, and their decision can be paramount.

For the annual renewal, I always wore long pants, a polo or button up shirt, shoes & sox. It may have been unnecessary. It was an easy way to prevent someone having a bad day at work from finding my appearance as a reason to make things difficult for me. Also it was probably influenced by what I saw at the Thai embassy in 2010 while requesting a tourist visa. I wrote this about it later:

Everything I’ve read or heard about how to request a visa comes down to ‘Be respectable’. Last year I went to the Thai embassy in Kuala Lumpur for a Tourist Visa. While waiting for my number to be called an angry voice caught my attention, as it did most of the people in the room. A Thai man behind the counter was getting louder with each word. Can’t remember what he said except for the last sentence, which was something like “And don’t ever come back here again!”. The visa seeker he was talking to was wearing a singlet (tank top to us Yanks), shorts, sandals, dreads past his shoulders and although the clothes may have been clean they were faded and worn. Every other man in the room had on long pants, shoes & socks, and a shirt with buttons. As singlet dude walked out of the room one of the people he passed said “What were you thinking?”.

For decades I wore a shirt, tie and jacket for work. When I go to Immigration, its work. So, I wear a shirt with a collar, slacks and hard shoes--it makes me feel business-like, rather than retired-old-fart-like.
In my business-like mood I am better equipped to deal with government officers.

I have just been there and guess what? TWO old Thai blokes wearing shorts, plus what I think was a Chinese female, as she had an agent with her, with short shorts such that you could almost see it winking at you!

Several Farangs, all neatly dressed, one of the men in dress shorts, all the ladies wearing long dresses. And Grandpa wearing long pants and a dress shirt, just in case you need to know. :D

Capt Ret. Sheiskopf. He's the type of person that inspires others to go "postal."

I'm sure there used to be signs in immigration offices displaying acceptable forms of clothing. Are they not there anymore (it's been years since I've been to immi)?
