Walk the dog on Suan Son Beach early morning and often looking South towards Khao Tao you can see a large plum of smoke rising into the sky over the town and blowing out to sea and driving around Khao Tao the same time in the morning the one and only place the smoke is coming from believe it or not is a stall on the side of the of the main road into town opposite 7/11 selling chicken satay, he has a huge fan and chimney belching smoke into the air

There is a good explainer about PM 2.5 from the Enquirer here ...

As Thailand faces another season of escalating air pollution, residents are growing increasingly concerned about the health risks associated with PM2.5 particles. These tiny pollutants, measuring 2.5 micrometers or smaller in diameter, have become a significant public health issue, especially in urban areas and regions prone to industrial emissions and agricultural burning. Experts warn that the microscopic size of PM2.5 particles allows them to penetrate deep into the respiratory tract, leading to a myriad of health problems that can affect Thais of all ages.

I've no idea what the truth is, but my son's annual 'Chiang Mai Air Quality' students have all returned to Chiang Mai. They are saying the air quality is not as bad as is being reported. When they arrived in Hua Hin, they said the air quality was far worse than was being reported.
 Maybe there's a time-lag in air quality reporting.

I'm aware of the website, and have been using it for years. I've posted because I know people on the ground in Chiang Mai (Hua Hin often shows vast differences on the website from area to area), and I've simply reported how people in Chiang Mai see the situation. These people come to my son every year when the air is too bad in Chiang Mai.

According to the IQAir Quality Report 2023 sadly the average PM2.5 in Hua Hin in 2023 was at Bangkok levels. So do not think the air in Hua Hin on average is better than in Bangkok any longer

Lung cancer, PM2.5 deaths surge in the North
People in northern Thailand, particularly in Chiang Mai and Lampang, face high mortality rates due to lung cancer. The Faculty of Medicine at Chiang Mai University has identified elevated levels of PM2.5 particles in the air as being one of the leading causes.

Assoc Prof Chalerm Liewsisakul from Chiang Mai University’s (CMU) Faculty of Medicine said PM2.5 pollution in the northern region has worsened over the past decade, leading to a surge in patients suffering from lung diseases.

One study shows the ratio of people who died of lung cancer per 100,000 people in the North increased from 20.3 in 2010 to 30.7 in 2019. That compares with figures for Bangkok of 14.9 in 2010 to 22.6 in 2019; the Northeast, 10.2 in 2010 to 17 in 2019; and the South, 9.5 in 2010 to 16.8 in 2019.

Comparative data from 2010 to 2021 shows the northern provinces, especially Chiang Mai and Lampang, have the highest death rates from lung cancer. This highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions to address air pollution and its health consequences in these areas, he said.

“In addition, the incidence of lung cancer among young individuals in the northern region surpasses that of other areas. This correlation is likely attributed to PM2.5 pollution, a link supported by global research indicating the heightened cancer risk, particularly lung cancer, associated with prolonged exposure to PM2.5 particles,” he said.

Chiang Mai again world's most polluted city
Chiang Mai led other cities as the most polluted place in the world on Tuesday morning, as thick smog continued to plague the northern region.

Chiang Mai municipality regained its spot as the most polluted city at 9.20am, with fine dust levels recorded at 203 microgrammes per cubic metre, according to IQAir rankings. The weather monitoring website labelled the city "very unhealthy", and it could continue into Wednesday and beyond.

Thailand will celebrate the Songkran water festival from Thursday until next Monday, and Chiang Mai city is normally one of the most popular destinations for holidaymakers.

Chiang Mai governor Nirat Pongsitthithavorn on Monday declared disaster zones in seven districts but not in Muang district, which is one of the most polluted areas in the province. The declaration facilitates the provision of budget-tied emergency assistance to Fang, Phrao, Chiang Dao, Mae Taeng, Chaiprakarn, Mae Ai and Wieng Haeng districts.

The governor ordered state officials to work from home until Thursday, because of the air pollution, and advised residents and visitors to abstain from outdoor activities if possible, and wear a mask if they leave home.

Rampant pollution in Asia has left more than half the world’s population breathing unsafe air

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/world/a ... pollution/

On any given day, IQAir’s map of Asia is a sea of yellow and orange, indicating moderate to unhealthy air quality, with only a few spots of green. On bad days, large swaths of the continent are purple, indicating an air-quality index (AQI) of more than 200, or “very unhealthy.”
