Memory House, Khao Tao

Post by Big Boy »

I've seen a lot of publicity for this place (basically a coffee shop) on social media since it opened. It is the in place for Thais to go to take dozens of selfies. It must be the most photographed thing in the Hua Hin area at the moment, outside of plates of somtam.

It was past 1pm on a Tuesday - I guessed the weekend rush would be over. I'd read there was a lot of parking, which there was, but when we got there, I took the last spot in the very ample car park - that should have been a warning. Feeling pleased with my self for parking, we headed towards the coffee shop.

First thoughts, very white and new, but a very 'plastic/false' feeling about the place, A lot of photo opportunities about the place, where people could go to take their selfies - it was easy to understand the popularity with Thais. In fact Mrs BB kept stopping to pose at various features, and I dutifully clicked away on the camera.

As soon as we got to the shop buildings - 2 prefabricated buildings, it became immediately apparent that it would be necessary to queue sometime for a coffee. I may be British, but I don't queue for coffee, so I just walked away, had a wander down to the lake and departed my much coveted parking space that people were queuing to fill. I drove to the opposite side of the lake and enjoyed a coffee in a place called Remember (do you think there may be a theme going on here?), with a better view of the lake.

The Memory House place is what it is. A magnet for selfie clicking Thais. However, it is tastefully done, with paths, raised walkways and stepping stones to the various selfie points. It was also very clean. I can definitely see the attraction for visiting Bangkokians. I probably won't go again, but if somebody gets the chance, and it's not too busy, I guess it might be a nice experience. It's certainly a little gold mine at the moment, assuming the other visitors were not like this one, and actually queued for their coffee.

What is it supposed to resemble? Looks like some old Amish barn house, not something you'd want to photograph. :duck:

It is if you're a visiting Bangkokian

It has been getting rave reviews since it opened. We deliberately went midweek to avoid the crowds, but even today it was hideously busy.

That's the allure probably, they look like Western farm buildings of old that they've never seen anywhere here.

Yes, it seems to be a winner here. A plastic version of something unusual, and build in dozens of selfie opportunities. Every one a winner.

We went by it 3-4 days in a row during the afternoon while doing something in Khao Tao and it was packed every day.

Migrant doesn't do crowds (especially for coffee shops)

Granddaughter has just told me that they didn't stop for coffee either - outrageous prices. However, I'm not sure if that's Starbucks type prices or higher. Can anybody who has been say? I turned away before I saw the menu.

No interest in the coffee shop... just another fad for the selfie brigade.

I have ran past it a few times and worth mentioning that they have made a good job with the walkway going round the perimeter of the Khao Tao reservior. Really great running spot.

Khao Tao has been more busy last week and will probably for the next three weeks as the kids are off school.

I agree entirely, but I don't mind trying anywhere once, albeit I find queues a huge turn-off.

I'll let you draw your own conclusions, but whilst business has been slack, the gardens at Memory House have been getting a bit of a make-over. They've gone from quite natural pampas grass to this:

Is it plastic? If so the sun is going to destroy it within a year and then it will look ugly as hell....or better put, uglier than it is now.
