They are reinforced concrete sections that are placed on what is called a ring beam and then with further shuttering, concrete is poured to create a solid concrete floor incorporating rebar for strengthening.

I still can't see what it is yet, but the base now looks complete with a lot of upright pillars growing out of it.

These guys seem to have a great job, getting wet in the sunshine whilst removing the timbers that were supporting everything.

I accept museum/cafe is the best guess we have for the finished article so far. This is the construction site at the opposite end of the lake that I originally heard was going to be a museum. I did change my mind when I saw a series of smaller (residential type?) buildings being constructed. However, looking at the quality of the roofing materials, it looks more of a commercial type of set up.

Looks pretty much like standard Thai building practice - they’ll probably start filling in the walls next and/or commence on the roof structure!!

Yes, nothing special. It is looking a lot larger now that it's going up in the air. When it was just a few piles in the lake, it looked quite small - too small to be a museum, but I am now starting to see it could be big enough. The cafe bit, if it happens IMHO will be a loser.

It's a very square building, currently loads of timber, and a few big metal lumps sticking out of the top. I still can't see what it is yet. At least the mystery is under bright blue sky now.

Thank you for this recommendation. We (finally) had a little walk along the lake, took some lovely photos of the shrine and had a nice meal in Remember Cafe

No, access to the lake is totally open. However, Memory Cafe demolished their access point about a year ago. I think people were using it to access the walkway as opposed to using the cafe. Turtle Bay does have an access point, but I doubt its public access i.e. there is a wooden draw bridge type of affair, but the bridge is usually up.

There iw Pin Up Cafe just before Memory Cafe, which has a solid access to the walkway. I usually park near Remember Cafe in the village itself, do my walk, and then drop in for a coffee or smoothie afterwards.

It really interests me to see what happens? Did they do their calculations correctly concerning structure weight and the footings. Did they go down to bedrock with their pilings?

They keep adding weight up top we could see a slow sinking, tipping or a real mess.

Obviously it could be anything from a cafe to a museum, but it’s a fairly typical construction albeit over water, so as Pete mentioned, hopefully someone clever did the calculations!!

They could be building a "Thai/HH Venice" - though a tad small!

Doesn't seem like they've included outdoor seating/platforms which I find a bit strange, so not a Café or Restaurant IMHO. Museum won't make the money they want, so some "pop-up/Mall" Shops and "Fast Food Stalls" perhaps.....

Yes, I've been looking for some sort of outdoor seating area to compliment a restaurant, but can't identify any yet.

I was really hoping for a large 'open air' events platform. The continually block the narrow walkway/closing the road with various events, and this would have been an ideal opportunity to have a large platform to host events, concerts, etc. I am well wrong.

I posted at the start of this thread that the usual way of driving piles is to keep hammering until refusal. That means that the pile, or whatever is being driven into the earth, stops when it will not go any further.

The indications while the piles were being installed was that most of them stopped at varying lengths still protruding out of the water. They then went around and cut off the tops, so that all of the piles are at the same height. It is not governed by the water depth, but by the sub-surface type of ground.

The calculation is based on the designed weight of whatever the stucture that is going to be built on top of the piling is going to be. The specifications for the piling is based on the cross sectional area of each pile driven into the earth, and how much friction that provides when driven to a specific depth into the ground, and therefore how many will be needed. Sometimes, a prior survey of the ground is done to determine what type of material is there.

If the pile hits bedrock prior to the depth that has been calculated, then each pile, as has been seen, will need to have the top cut off.

As that is an artificicial lake, they may well of known what type of ground they had to deal with before building the lake.

Every building in Bangkok, and most places in Thailand, even small houses, need to have some form of piling, and the calculations and method is well known.

There's an awful lot of walls being built inside the structure. If it is a museum as we've been told, it doesn't look as though there will be a big exhibition hall. To my untrained eye at the moment it looks more like a lot of little stalls as per an indoor market. There does not seem to be much provision for windows yet, but they've not reached the upper limits of the structure yet.
