We have a lovely expression in Suffolk/Norfolk: 'on the drag' meaning 'late'. Mr. VS learnt it very quickly when he moved down from Scotland to Suffolk.

My mother always told me that wearing winklepickers would ruin my feet in later life. Looking at my feet now, she could have been right.

Winklepickers were in contrast to Teddy Boy's footwear. They wore 'Brothel Creepers', shoes with a very thick crepe sole.
Winklepickers were worn by the 'Mods'. To have been part of it means you are pretty old now!

I can remember getting a pair when I was maybe 12 or 13, but only after I had somehow managed to persuade my mom that they wouldn’t ruin my feet as was what most mums were saying (HHTel above).

winkle pickers were very uncomfortable, they were followed in fashion by sensible chisel points and bovver boots.
