For the curious, you can get the status of various reservoirs here:

https://www.thaiwater.net/DATA/REPORT/p ... =7&lang=en

The URL defaults to Lam Takhong but is easily changed from there.

Thanks for this.

If I am reading this correctly, Pranburi Dam was lower than at any time in the last two years until the current rains appeared. The upturn is amazing.

8,000 homes inundated in Nakhon Ratchasima after 2 days of torrential rain

https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/weather ... ntial-rain

The Thai PM Prayut Chan-o-cha is urging emergency services and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation in the Pak Chong district of Nakhon Ratchasima, in Thailand’s north east, to urgently attend to the suffering of the region’s flood victims. Flooding has cut electricity and water supplies to several areas around the district.

8,000+ houses have been flooded after the overflowing Lam Takong River inundated nearby farming and residential communities. The flooding follows days of heavy rain, especially in the Khao Yai mountainous area, in the province’s south west.

Nakhon Ratchasima Governor Vichien Chanthanothai has attended the region’s worst hit areas today to distribute relief supplies, lunch boxes and survival kits to flood victims. Most have stayed in their flooded homes with family and to protect their property.

“It will take another day for flood waters to recede and the situation will gradually return to normal.”

But Thailand’s Royal Irrigation Department reports that the recent rains in Pak Chong have been an enormous help to the Lam Phra Ploeng and Khun Dan Prakanchon dams, which were almost empty earlier this year.

• Lam Phra Ploeng reservoir is now 93% full, with 145 million cubic metres of water

• Khun Dan Prakanchon reservoir is 96% full, with 216 million cubic metres of water

In Phetchaburi, south of Bangkok, more than 400 homes in the Nong Ya Plong district, north of the province, along with the Petkasem highway near the main Cha-am intersection, were flooded earlier today after 2 days of heavy rain in the province. Flood waters, in areas north west of Hua Hin, have now receded after train tracks through parts of Phetchaburi were inundated under 10 cm of floodwater earlier today.

This is close enough to Thailand with the storm heading this way to put the information here.

Dozens killed in floods across Southeast Asia as tropical storm Nangka approaches

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/10/13/asia ... index.html

Nearly 40 people have died in Vietnam and Cambodia and scores more were missing, including rescuers, due to prolonged heavy rain and flash flooding as tropical storm Nangka edged towards the Vietnamese coast on Tuesday.

Heavy rains since early October have caused deadly floods and landslides in several provinces in central Vietnam and displaced thousands of people in western Cambodia, officials and state media said.

The floods are expected to worsen over the coming days, with tropical storm Nangka forecast to dump more rain as it makes landfall in Vietnam on Wednesday.

Nangka, packing wind speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour), will trigger heavy rain of up to 400 millimeters (16 inches) in parts of northern and central Vietnam from Wednesday through Friday, its weather agency said.

Ongoing flooding has killed at least 28 people in Vietnam, and 11 in Cambodia, where almost 25,000 houses and 84,000 hectares of crops have been damaged, according to local media.

Vietnamese disaster management authorities said over 130,000 houses have been impacted.

Seventeen construction workers were missing following a landslide at the site of a hydropower dam project in the central Vietnamese province of Thua Thien Hue, state media reported.

An additional 13 people sent to rescue the workers are also missing, the state-run Nhan Dan newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Vietnam's Prime Minister, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, has instructed the defense ministry to send more rescue troops to the site of the landslide, according to a government statement.

As of Tuesday morning they were unable to reach the site, the statement added, because of high water levels, heavy rains, and additional landslides.

North, Isan, South brace for floods

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... for-floods

Nakhon Ratchasima, provinces in the Northeast and the South of Thailand are facing floods as a storm approaches.

The Meteorological Department warned the North, the Northeast, Central area and the East to brace for another storm from South China Sea, moving towards Vietnam on Friday.

The department said that one depression moved from the South China Sea to Vietnam yesterday and caused downpours in the North, Northeast, Central region and the East. Heavy rain in those regions is expected until tomorrow, while in the South, a southwestern monsoon has brought heavy rain to many areas and will cause big swells in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand.

In Nakhon Ratchasima, water discharged from the Lam Phra Phloeng Dam caused flooding in Pak Thong Chai district overnight, with floodwater rising to the roofs of many one-storey houses.

Rescue workers yesterday used boats to distribute relief supplies to affected people in flood-hit areas in the district after the water level at the dam exceeded its storage capacity, prompting officials to accelerate water discharges.

A huge amount of discharged water flowed into main and irrigation canals, causing them to burst their banks and flood farmland and many houses on Thursday night.

Fifteen homes in Khok Samran village and 21 houses in Takhian Khu village in tambon Takhob were under water, authorities reported.

Pak Thong Chai district chief Banlang Waisiri sent people to distribute drinking water, food and other relief items to affected households.

In municipality areas of the province, flooding is expected to rise to a depth of 30cm. One stable was inundated with 14 horses evacuated.

Yesterday, the Mun River in Ubon Ratchathani was measured at 5.6 metres, 9cm higher than the previous day, and villagers in municipality areas, located in the lower plain, have been evacuated with their belongings after their houses along the river were submerged.

In Buri Ram, Anupong Suksomnit, the deputy governor, deployed rescuers to help flood victims in Khu Mueang district as their houses and paddy fields were flooded.

In Trang, the Trang River overflowed and hit two districts, Mueang and Sikao. Sixty families in the municipality area were flooded after water rose to 30-150cm.

Duangkhae Rakpong, a villager, said her area is located near waste water so villagers often contract athlete's foot and leptospirosis when they have to wade through flooded areas.

Flood warning for Mae Klong communities

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... ommunities

KANCHANABURI: Communities on both sides of the Mae Klong river have been warned of possible flooding as more water is being released from Mae Kong Dam in Tha Muang district.

Deputy governor Pongsathorn Sirisakhon said since early this month there has been heavy rain in Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi and other western provinces and a lot of water has drained into the Mae Klong river.

The Meteorological Department has forecast more rain to come.

Because of this, the 13th Irrigation Office had increased the release of water from Mae Klong dam to over 1,000 cubic metres per second. As a result, the water level below the dam will rise 0.50-1 metre above the present level.

Local administrations, businesses and residents along the river should closely monitor the situation as they may experience flooding, Mr Pongsathorn said.

Korat area dams are considerably above their designed capacity levels, resulting in large discharge operations, resulting in more flooding.

Pak Thong Chai flooding persists, water on highway

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... on-highway

NAKHON RATCHASIMA: The flooding in Pak Thong Chai district continues unabated, with Lam Phra Phloeng Dam increasing its rate of discharge downstream as runoff from heavy rain streams into the reservoir.

The dam is discharging more water into the irrigation system and natural waterways, which are rising higher.

The Hin Ta Ngo reservoir wall has also ruptured, adding to the flooding of communities and roads in the district.

Lam Phra Phloeng-Krathok intersection on Highway 2412 was under 10 centimetres of water on Tuesday morning, but was still passable.

A section of Highway 2412 between Lam Phra Phloeng Dam and the Lam Phra Phloeng intersection was under about 15cm of water. Small vehicles were proceeding with caution.

The 3rd Highway District and local administrations put up warning signs along the road and sent officials to many spots to direct traffic.

The Lam Phra Phloeng Dam is brimming, currently holding about 165 million cubic metres of water, or 106.53% of its designed capacity.

Full dams add to flood woes

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... flood-woes

Low-lying areas near three major dams in Nakhon Ratchasima were hit by flash floods on Tuesday after water levels in the reservoirs exceeded maximum capacity.

Lam Phra Phloeng dam on Tuesday recorded 165 million cubic metres of water, four times more than the amount recorded last year during the same period.

The Lam Takhong and Lam Phlaimat reservoirs were at 105% and 102% of their capacity.

Roads, villages and an industrial estate in the heart of Pak Thong Chai were inundated, affecting more than 5,000 households in 14 communities. The flood water was at least one metre deep in some places.

Residents along both banks of the Moon River were also warned to brace themselves for flooding. Rescue teams were sent in to help flood-hit residents, local officials said on Tuesday.

The Lam Phra Phloeng-Krathok intersection on Highway 2421 was flooded by around 10 centimetres of water while a section of the highway from Lam Phra Phloeng reservoir to Lam Phra Phloeng intersection was under 15cm of water. Small cars were warned against using the road, the officials said.

Route 304 from Nakhon Ratchasima to Kabin Buri district of Prachin Buri was made impassable due to flooding 50-60 cm deep. Ban Mueangpak Samakkhi School was also temporarily closed due to the flooding.

Nakhon Ratchasima Governor Wichian Chantharanothai issued a flood alert, warning residents in Si Khiu, Sung Noen, Kham Thale So, Muang and Chalerm Phrakiat districts, in the Lam Takhong river basin to be prepared evacuate.

The Phimai National Museum, meanwhile reinforced its flood barriers with 2,000 sandbags in an attempt to protect its antiquities.

In Sa Kaeo, water from Watthana Nakhon district quickly flooded Aranyaprathet municipality and 12 border villages. Aranyaprathet market suffered its worst floods in eight years.

In Kanchanaburi, the Talat Kao Kabin community was submerged in waist-high floodwaters.

Heavy rain in Phanom Thuan district affected more than 100 homes and rice fields, while strong currents also damaged bridges and check dams. Local people described the damage as the worst in 10 years.

More rain is expected later this week as Tropical Storm Saudel approaches.

Issan has had the brunt of the rain this year, further south the reservoirs are still very low which will lead to water shortages next year (unless there is a motherload of rain in the next six weeks).

Chao Phraya River set to rise, but Bangkok flooding 'risk is low', govt says

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... -govt-says

The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) has warned of rising water levels in the Chao Phraya River but played down flooding risks in Bangkok even though 13 provinces had flooded on Saturday.

RID deputy director-general Thaweesak Thanadachopol said a monsoon trough covering the lower part of the North, the Central Plains region and the East had caused heavy rains in Kamphaeng Phet, Nakhon Sawan and Phichit, raising the water level of the Chao Phraya in Nakhon Sawan province.

Excess water from rain has flowed into waterways in the provinces which emptied into the river, one of the country's lifelines for agriculture.

The Chao Phraya barrage dam, meanwhile, has continued to receive more water from the Chao Phraya and Sakae Krang rivers. The dam's water level in downstream Ayutthaya province is expected to increase by up to 1 metre in the next few days.

Although the department is discharging water from irrigation areas hit by the inundation in the lower part of the Chao Phraya River basin, it confirmed the water volume making its way downstream via the river will not affect Bangkok.

In Nakhon Ratchasima's Non Sung district, the Moon River burst its banks and flooded more than 30 homes and paddy fields, prompting residents to move their belongings to higher ground.

Riverside homes were under more than 1m of water which is feared to rise further in the next couple of days.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has reported that flooding has persisted in 13 provinces. The department and agencies were providing emergency assistance as pumps were mobilised in flooded zones.

A total of 34 provinces and more than 65,000 people were affected by heavy rains caused by a depression and the southwest monsoon from Oct 7-24. The death toll stood at four.

The Thai Meteorological Department yesterday reported a high-pressure system from China in the central and eastern regions, causing the temperatures in the upper part of the country to drop by 1-3ºC, strong winds and heavy rains in some areas in the North.

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... lash-flood

SURAT THANI: A construction worker was found dead in a roadside ditch in Ban Takhun district on Sunday. It was believed he had drowned in a flash flood following five hours of heavy rain.

Pol Capt Somsak Rithikul, an investigator from Ban Takhun police station, said the body of Chaiwiwat Thongsamrit, 50, was found at about 8.30am in a roadside ditch full of water near Ban Tham Non village in tambon Khao Wong. The body was lying underneath a motorcycle.

The body was sent to Ban Takhun Hospital for an autopsy, which revealed drowning as the cause of death.

Relatives said Chaiwiwat left his home on Saturday morning for work. His co-workers told them heavy rain began in late afternoon and continued for about five hours, stranding Chaiwiwat at his workplace. He finally left on his motorcycle after midnight, only to be found dead on Sunday morning.

It was believed he was hit by a flash flood and drowned on his way home.

On Sunday morning, three villages and a connecting road in tambon Yan Yao of Khirirat Nikhom district were flooded.

Flood misery persists in 4 provinces, severe along Moon River

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... moon-river

Persistent flooding in four provinces, with more homes along the Moon River in Phimai district of Nakhon Rachasima inundated in the early hours of Friday.

Water discharged from the Lam Takhong dam and overflow from the Moon River sent water flooding into Jabok village in tambon Krabueng Yai of Phimai district.

More than 40 houses and a local temple were swamped as the water quickly rose to about one metre deep.

Residents struggled in torch and lantern light to keep their possessions safe, their movements hampered by water up to their waists.

Ornrat Phimpru, head of Jabok village, said water discharged from the Lam Takhong and rain from the typhoon that moved into Vietnam had filled local waterways that emptied into the Moon River. Water overflowing from Lam Phra Phloeng dam also flowed into the Moon River through its tributaries, and it burst its banks.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation on Friday reported that flash floods, runoff, landslides and storms had affected a total of 34 provinces across the country from Oct 7 to Oct 30.

The flooding had drained in most areas, but persisted in parts of Nakhon Ratchasima, Prachin Buri, Surat Thani and Suphan Buri.

In northeastern Nakhon Ratchasima province, flooding persisted in nine districts - Pak Chong, Pak Thong Chai, Chok Chai, Non Sung, Muang, Phimai, Chalerm Phrakiat, Chakkarat and Sung Noen.

In eastern Prachin Buri province, two districts of Sri Maha Phot and Kabin Buri were still inundated.

In southern Surat Thani province, two districts of Khian Sa and Phun Phin were still flooded.

In central Suphan Buri province, three districts of Song Phi Nong, Muang and Bang Pha Ma were submerged.

Landslides caused by flash floods and runoff had affected four provinces of Chumphon, Phuket, Satan and Krabi, the department said.

Seven provinces were hit by storms - Nakhon Sawan, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Kanchanaburi, Phangnga, Chumphon and Ubon Ratchathani - that damaged 77 houses in 35 villages. Three people in Sing Buri province were reported to have been injured.

The situation had since eased, the department reported.
