“Whores” & “Sluts”: why “good people” love these insults

Post by PeteC »

Open your eyes foreigners and tourists to the real Thailand. :(

Mudslinging, curses, and insults are an unfortunate part of politics. Especially in the age of social media in which everyone with a Twitter account can make public their vilest thoughts.

Both sides of the political divide are guilty of this.

But Thailand has witnessed a pattern of gender-based insults since the PDRC (People’s Democratic Reform Committee) took to the street against the Yingluck Shinawatra government in 2014. Even the people who claimed to be “good,” “educated,” and of society’s “upper-crust,” they hurled insults of “whores” and “sluts’ ‘ at her, which has nothing to do with politics.

Likewise, the student protests today suffered from many degradations. But if you are females, the mudslinging goes far beyond political differences. The curses and insults they used are the most degrading form of gender-based humiliation in the Thai culture.

It doesn’t matter if student protestors are underaged children.

“It’s not just Thai conservatives. It’s conservatives in any country,” said Busayapa Srisompong, a human rights lawyer and founder of SHero, a non-profit organization that helps women who have suffered from domestic violence.

Busayapa explained that people with conservative values place women in a private sphere and men in a public sphere. In other words, women are supposed to stay in the kitchen while men go out to work.

This is the patriarchy system. If a woman steps into the public sphere and does something “unwomanly,” such as speaking out, taking a stance, or changing the norm, conservative people would likely use gender-based insults to degrade her.

“Even in developed countries, people still do this,” said Busayapa.

According to her, Thailand is undergoing rapid changes. Therefore, those who adhere to conservative traditions are more reactionary than ever in using gender stereotypes to judge and dismiss the changes that threaten their values.

“Conservative Thais assume that women should be ladies, act in a certain way, and stay at home. Be modest and quiet,” she said.

“If a woman doesn’t fit their gender view, immediately they see her as a bitch, or an evil woman.”

According to Busayapa, this prevailing cultural perspective is because conservatives do not believe women have equal dignity to men.

“To put it simply, if a woman doesn’t conform to the gender stereotype, she will be shunned and degraded. Especially in this political movement, it angers them, even more, to see women and young girls standing up and speaking out for their rights.”

Here are some examples.............

The danger is that the "scared people" will overreact and commit violence against women. This is not a peaceful society, that's a veneer for foreign consumption.

Yes, the same thing can be seen in our forum's threads concerning politics.

Hi,

Not sure I fully understand the OP, but seems an interesting topic none the less.

Seems like a comment on present Thai social attitudes? By conservative do you mean traditional, probably older, maybe male Thais? who are talking in such terms.

Are the comments you make a refection on social media and the extremes that go with it, or Thai society more broadly. Love to hear varied opinions from both Farangs or Thai nationals.

Who are the good guys you refer to? :|

I think it's too much of a generalisation to say that it's normal in developed Countries for 'conservatives' to become sexist when the status quo is challenged and leads to woman being abused. Not to any degree in any case. It just wouldn't be tolerated.

Believing in the 'status quo' in Thailand is drummed into generation after generation from birth. That doesn't really happen in 'advanced' Countries.

However, youth v aged, which this is also about, is not unique to Thailand, it's a generational thing. It's just that the masses in Thailand have not really been exposed to so much outside influence and awareness of the recent history of their Country, as well as the recent and current status of their institutions, as the better educated of their youth currently are. Which is why the generals, who have so much to lose, spend so much time and effort in trying to control the internet. In the circumstances, I doubt they will make any effort to stop any such abuse. They could well be behind much of it.

Drifting slightly away from OP remarks. The particular insults that female public figures are subjected to focusing on their sexuality. And you can be sure that the DEM VP nominee in the US is about to be attacked in this way.
At a lower level it pains me when I hear sex-tourists using these offensive words against the young women of Thailand.

MISS GRAND 2020 CALLED ‘UGLY’ AND ‘NEGRO’ FOR SUPPORTING PROTESTS
The winner of Miss Grand Thailand 2020 pageant contest came under fire Monday from pro-establishment netizens for siding with the anti-government protests.

Pacharaporn “Nam” Chantarapadit, 22, was crowned the winner on Sunday night after a round of question-and-answer section, in which contestants were asked for their opinions about the protest that was unfolding in Bangkok’s historic quarter.

“From my heart, I pick the protesters,” Nam, who represented Rayong, said. “We have rights to express our views and we want to choose what’s best for our country. More than that, I want to say to the government.”

She went on in English, “If you calling this country Thailand, we need a real democracy. And moreover, we need you to get out of the country!”

Supporters of the government immediately lashed out at Nam in a slew of negative comments. Some also attacked her look and deployed racially charged terms in their criticism.

“I thought you were a negro,” wrote user Kalayakorn Thanonpijirakul.

“This squid-ink-skin is degenerate,” wrote Chote Sommee.

“Not only is she ugly, her behavior is bad too. Do the judges also hate the monarchy institution?” wrote user Tikumporn Singhaseni.

“This is the ugliest beauty queen I’ve ever seen. I thought this was a beauty queen from Africa,” wrote Khunphuwasit Shi.

“She’s as black as a burnt-and-forgotten coals. What are you guys doing to Thailand?” wrote Tepphabutr Misababa Latcharot.

I've just asked Mrs BB her views on the young lady (she watches these beauty contest things). She said she was very ugly, and the other contestants were much sexier.

I must say, looking at her nose in the photo, she looks half Farang.

They all look a bit 'plastic' to me - but the torrent of abuse came about over her political comments. It shows both how profoundly racist Thais generally are (especially against races they view as lower than themselves i.e. dark skinned ones), and how deeply polarized the country is politically (and yes, I know that is pretty much the case elsewhere in the world today).

New normal eh!

I don’t think any of the ones in the photo look particularly beautiful and yes, I’m sure they’ve all had “nose jobs”.

I'd only gone to the first photo. Yes, to me, I'd have said at least the one on the right was a bloke. I've never been a fan of Thais mutilating their naturally pretty faces by sticking on a Farang nose. I've never seen a good one.

Yuck, did you watch the video? Ugly inside and out. Proper full of herself. Kardashian wannabe. Real bottom rung of the ladder trash kinda stuff. Couldn't be bothered to learn a couple of English sentences for the show. Too involved in how she (?) looks.

And the runner's up...

"I want to say to the protesters, if there was no Miss Grand Thailand 2020 pageant, I would be at the protest.”

Riiiiiight. So let me get this straight... if you weren't at a barbie doll contest you'd be out fighting for a cause you believe in. Glad you got your priorities right.

These beauty pageants need to be a thing of the past. Just objectifies women as nothing more than tits and arse. Same as fashion shows for men and women - walking mannequins. I understand they are trying to make it more intellectual, recently. In this instance, like many others (see below 😂), the questions just made it worse.

Suppose I should add that, just because I didn't discuss the racist comments directed towards the lady, it doesn't mean I condone them.

Just choosing not to discuss racism at all anymore from here on out.

Kind regards,
