Quality of multifocal optical lenses

Post by 404cameljockey »

Hi,

In Market Village I bought a pair of lenses to fit glasses frames I already have. Plastic, and supposedly variable focus from close/reading distance up to 2 metres.

The centre of focus seems completely wrong, reading is sharp only if I look with my head tilted left/right away from the reading matter, (looking left with the left lens and vice versa for the right - an actual Marty Feldman, which I'm not).

Truly awful manufacture.

I hate plastic lenses anyway, but as these only cost around 4000 Baht I guess I can go back and get them to try again without too much argument.

I bought from an Optical franchise that has many branches around the country, I guess I don't need to name them.

I suppose I'm just looking for advice for the future as to where to buy good quality lenses with proper manufacture. If not in Hua Hin then sadly I guess I need to go to BKK (for several days? give me strength....)?

I don't want to screw my old eyes up even further.

My wife and I have our glasses made at Time Optic. They do good work on difficult lenses. My wife needs prism lenses and the optometrist at Time Optics did the exam then, sent her to the Eye Doctor across from Hua Hin hospital to double check the prescription. I have progressive/transition lenses. I've used Time Optics for several years and never had a problem. I went to THAT shop in MV and they screwed up my prescription. After much noise by me, they refunded my money and that's when I found Time Optic. They are located next to the Hua Hin Mall. The son of the owner is there & speaks English. He's a bit of a twit but deal with the optometrist. If possible, bring someone who speaks Thai, it's easier.

I know this has been said a hundred times, but Dr. Pairat (between 88/1 and 88/2) is probably the best if not the only ophthalmologist in Hua Hin. My whole family have been treated at one time or other, even family from the UK. I had cataract lens replacement done some years ago and I can still read small print without specs. Bangkok Hospital also use him for any ophthalmologist related work. I've known him to tell you if you don't need glasses whereas most like Top Charoen and Time Optic are in the business of selling frames.
I believe Dr. Arunee and most of the others in Hua Hin are optometrists as opposed to medical eye doctors (ophthalmologists)
There are lots of posts about him:

I also go to Dr. Pairat, he treats my glaucoma but for lenses and frames I go to Time Optic. If you just want lenses and supply your own frames, they'll do that. Their prices are lower than Pairats. I'm not trying to sell them to you, just telling you what I do.

That's fine HD. As I'm sure you know, you don't have to buy lens/frames from Pairat. He'll give you a prescription for you to buy anywhere.
I would personally trust an examination/prescription from him over anyone else.

I agree. Although, in my wife's case, he didn't have the equipment to examine her for double vision. He was great for me. He diagnosed the glaucoma and prescribed drops that brought it down into normal range. He sent me to Hua Hin hospital to do a cataract exam and it concurred with what he found. They'll probably outlive me.

Thanks, I really must make a sticky note to remind me about this guy, I have seen him recommended here.

I want a glaucoma (air puff) test which I know the high street shops don't have the equipment for. Does he do this also?

Thanks, I will make sure I remember that.

This is the second time I've used THAT shop at MV. No more.

By the way, do you know if it's possible to buy glass lenses nowadays? The driving glasses I bought in THAT shop a couple of years ago crazed over because of the heat in the car when I left them in there for two or three hours. Plus I am hopeless at avoiding scratches on plastic lenses (an age thing I'm sure, which goes along with needing a teatowel to protect a clean shirt during TV dinners).

When I had cataract surgery and my mother had laser correction, he certainly appeared to have plenty of equipment I've never seen before. Just call in and ask.
Bangkok Hospital were sending their patients to him. Since then, he's done a deal with Bangkok Hospital and he carries out his surgical procedures there. I would guess that he has as much equipment as is necessary.

Edit: That's with reference to Dr. Pairat.

When examining my wife's eyes for double vision, he said he didn't have the necessary equipment. Other than that Pairat seems to be able to handle everything else.

I don't know anything about glass lenses. You can ask them. I use a diaper instead of a tea towel, it functions for other needs as well. :blues:

Yes he does. And a macular check as well, if you want.

I use Dr Pairat to get prescriptions and then order from overseas via internet. I've been happy with what I've ordered from Zenni and Onlineopticiansuk. Lenses are much better than those I've previously bought in Thailand. Especially sunglasses that don't fade like the Thai ones. All lenses are plastic but of different grades that you can choose, and scratch resistant coating, anti-reflective, anti-UV, anti-blue-glare, up to you. My last order from Zenni took less than 2 weeks to arrive (from China). Bifocals.

I too refuse plastic lenses and refuse to patronize the chain outfits that are just jewelry sellers serving you with clerks, not proper licensed opticians, ophthalmologists or even optometrists.

I was not able to find glass lenses in Hua Hin. Even Rutnin Eye Hospital in Bkk cannot provide them. We buy my specs at Siam Optical, a family-owned place at 535-537 Sukhumvit Road., Between, Sukhumvit Soi 29 - Soi 31. 086-374-6379     02-258-4644. They can provide glass lenses and speak excellent English. They have another shop across Sukhumvit and about a block away but we have never been to that one.

They do not grind the lenses on site but do have machinery to grind the blanks on site to fit whatever frames you have or choose. So also if you break your frames they can grind your lenses to fit a new slightly smaller frame, or much smaller frame, usually while you wait.

My correction is abnormally strong. Before surgery it was -10.5 to -11.0. Now is -7.5 to -8.0 and some prism correction too. So I do not buy mail order glasses, they need to be properly fitted to my face for correct focal distance. So we go there, they fit the frames, order the lenses, and mail them to us in 2 or 3 days and I have not been disappointed..

Also, if needing a trip to Bkk, especially to Rutnin Eye Hospital there is a hotel almost directly across the street from Rutnin Eye Hospital that is nice but reasonable price. We paid ฿1300 - ฿1800 including breakfast a couple years ago. There are 2 buildings, the older one has bigger rooms. Do not know if they have any stars, maybe none, we don’t give $h!t about that, but they do have a gym and a nice swimming pool and limited parking and it was fine for us. I do not even know the name of the place, wife is at hospital tending to her father and my info is in Thai for taxi driver and too much bother to figure out how to scan and attach to this right now but phone is 02-259-0222. All you gotta do is go to Rutnin Eye Hospital and it is across the street, about 12 meters toward Sukhumvit in a cul-de-sac, or small Soi that dead ends into it. If confused introduce yourself to Mr Google, he has good maps
