Flooding in Narathiwat after heavy rain

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... heavy-rain

NARATHIWAT: Flooding is reported in many parts of this southernmost border province after three days of heavy rain.

In Sungai Padi district, where Muslim and Buddhist communities co-exist, villages and fields have been inundated and public utilities affected, and the water continued to rise on Wednesday morning.

The ground at Wat Prachumchonthara was covered by water 50 centimetres deep.

Phrathep Silwisut, the abbot, said the flooding began about 2am, with runoff flowing rapidly into the temple compound.

Sawet Phetnui, the Sungai Padi district chief, and Phian Manosak, chairman of the Sungai Padi tambon organisation organisation (TAO) sent work crews to help move furniture and other items to higher places.

Officials were stationed at the main temple gate, where the current was strong, to help people wanting to enter for religious activities.

People living near the Pattani River have been warned to move their belongings to high ground as the town area could be flooded by Saturday morning, as heavy rain continues to pound the southernmost region.

The Pattani municipality issued the warning on Friday for people living beside the river and in nearby low-lying areas.

The should start relocating valuable household goods to safe places and stay vigilant, as a large volume of water is moving downstream.

The municipality and the provincial disaster prevention and mitigation office announcements said Bang Lang dam in Bannang Satar district of Yala was full and was releasing water downstream to prevent structural damage.

The flood surge would reach the town by Saturday morning and the river could overflow its banks.

The river passes through the town before flowing into the Gulf of Thailand.

Pattani and three other southernmost provinces of Narathiwat, Songkhla and Yala have been pelted by heavy rain for days.

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said on Friday that flooding in Pattani and Narathiwat remained worrisome. Water levels in Yala were stable, while in Songkhla the flooding was receding, it said.

Rain pounds Pattaya, floods roads, communities

Post by PeteC »

Significantly worse than usual. :( https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... ommunities

Where I am in Rayong facing the sea to the south it was bad, but not nearly as bad as the Pattaya area.

We didn't do a "Floods of 2021" thread this year in the hope we didn't need one. Perhaps we'll have to start one for September and October?

CHON BURI: Heavy rain pounded Pattaya and other areas of Bang Lamung district on Friday morning, causing flooding on many roads and in communities.

The downpour lashed the beach town for several hours. Many sections of Sukhumvit, South Pattaya, Pattaya Sai 3 and Pattaya Beach roads were impassable to small vehicles. The floodwater rose to 1-2 metres deep in some areas.

Floodwater also inundated homes and was more than a metre deep in villages on soi Khao Talo in tambon Nong Prue. Many households were unable to save their belongings, which were flooded and damaged.

The Meteorological Department on Friday said a monsoon trough lies across the lower North, the Central, the East and the lower Northeast regions and into the low-pressure cell in Cambodia.

Coupled with the moderate southwest monsoon that is prevailing across the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, persistent rain, heavy rain and isolated very heavy rain is likely throughout Thailand.

Residents of at-risk areas in the North, the Northeast, the East and the South were warned that heavy rain that might trigger flash floods and forest run-off.

An interesting but sad side note is that while the Central Festival shopping complex on Beach Road in Pattaya is closed for business, it's being used as a vaccination point. Hundreds of Pfizer shots for foreigners were scheduled for today which apparently didn't happen. Central Festival is to the left in the second photo.

I see photos like the second one, and wonder if they are driving through normal rain water, or is that sea water. If sea water, it can't be doing the body work of those vehicles a lot of good.

Having been their in flood season (on business I assure you!) the floods run from high ground. Sukhumvit down to the coast and eventually run into the sea. The 'run down' is much faster than the 'run off' hence the flooding even on beach road.

Yes, several city mayors have tried for a decades to change the geography and geology of the area, all a monumental failure, but spreading a lot of money around to friends and family in the process. :banghead:

Certainly not restricted to Thailand or even Asia, it's just "degrees of" I guess!

Over the years, visits and longer stays in Thailand, I've experienced pretty severe flooding in Pattaya, but I think the worst "flash flooding" I've experienced was in Lampang. We were there on "high ground", but Christ, waters took some time to dissipate/drain IMHO (not disputing what you are saying HHTel).

We did have a Floods 2021 thread, totally forgot about it. Time for some new entries.

Samut Prakan's Bangpoo Industrial Estate flooded

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... te-flooded

SAMUT PRAKAN: Bangpoo Industrial Estate in Muang district of this coastal province south of Bangkok was heavily flooded, Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) governor Veeris Ammarapala said on Sunday.

Mr Veeris said the inundation began at about 2am after a long and heavy downpour. Many roads around the estate were flooded, including Sukhumvit, Srinakarin, Puttharaksa and Theparak.

The estate is located on a large area of about 5,400 rai at Moo 4 in tambon Phraeksa of Muang district.

The entrie estate was about 1 metre under water, with numerous cars and motorcycles submerged.

Workers from companies inside the industrial estates were unable to leave their factories after completing their night shift.

Mr Veeris said the army's Quartermaster Department, at the estate's request, sent a large vehicle and troops to help transport the workers out of the estate.

Water pumps were deployed to drain the water out of the estate into a canal nearby.

The Samut Prakan provincial administration organisation (PAO) asked the Irrigation Department to subsequently drain the water out of the canal into the sea.

Mr Veeris said on Sunday afternoon the water inside the estate had dropped to a level passable for big vehicles. He expected small vehicles to be able to drive out on Sunday night.

The Bang Phli Industrial Estate, also in Samut Prakan, had been warned to prepare for possible flooding.

Mr Veeris said the IEAT would hold a meeting on Monday to follow up on the flooding situation.

Outside the Bangpoo Industrial Estate, the Phrueksa 15 housing estate on Tamru-Khlong Kao road with more than 3,000 houses was about 80 centimetres under water. Residents tried to protect their properties by building a flood prevention wall with sandbags.

Why don't they have their own pumps, doesn't this happen nearly every year?

NNT- National News Bureau of Thailand

Samutprakan Governor assigns the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) to visit flooded area in the province and deliver urgent helps after heavy rains throughout the night and the high sea level.

The two factors cause flooding in many areas including residential zone and Bangpoo Industrial Estate which is flooded up to 50 cm, blocking small cars from the commute.

Dam reservoirs filling up in Korat

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... p-in-korat

NAKHON RATCHASIMA: The three major dams in this northeastern province are expected to be full to capacity by November, with heavy rain forecast from late September into October, National Water Resources secretary-general Somkiat Prajamwong said on Monday.

Mr Somkiat said the NWR was closely monitoring the dams.

As of Sept 6, Lam Takong Dam in Si Khiu district was holding 214 million cubic metres of water, or 68% of its capacity. Lam Phra Phloeng Dam in Pak Thong Chai district had 101 million cubic metres, or 65% of its capacity. Moon Bon Dam in Khon Buri district was holding 165 million cubic metres, or 60% of its capacity.

With heavy rain predicted over the area from late September into October, it was expected the dams would be full by November, Mr Somkiat said.

Plans were already in place to avert flooding downstream from the dams and divert water into retention areas and other waterways.

Pattaya flooded again, residents vent frustration

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... rustration

PATTAYA: An overnight downpour left Pattaya City's roads inundated on Wednesday, and residents fed up with repeated flooding used social media to complain about authorities' continual failure to resolve the problem.

The Traffic Police Twitter account and the We Love Pattaya Facebook page reported flooding in several locations, including Sukhumvit Road and streets along the beach in the downtown area.

Part of the road running along Jomthien Beach subsided and was closed to vehicles, the traffic police network tweeted.

Regular flooding spots were also under water, including the area near the railway station and roads in Bang Lamung district bordering Pattaya City, according to We Love Pattaya, a Facebook account reporting on the city.

The heavy rain triggered a landslide at Bali Hai pier, slightly damaging three vehicles parked in the area, according to a parking lot employee.

Red flags were raised as a warning for all small boats to remain ashore as waves rose three metres high.

The flooding came as Tropical Storm Conson brings rain to most parts of the country...... (Continued at link)
