Running Shoes

Post by handdrummer »

Any recommendations of the best place(s) to buy running shoes that don't cost 6000 BHT?

Pretty much any market. But at the end of the day, you get what you pay for.

Not always; I paid, for me, serious money, bought a pair of Asics and they fell apart.

I need something more specific than "any market." Villa & Makro don't sell shoes.

Have a look downstairs in Market Village. Last time I was there, there was a couple of places selling decent sports shoes.

There's something about the climate in Thailand that just destroys trainers. The rubber perishes quickly and the glue seems to lose adhesion. I go through a pair of trainers a year in Thailand although I do run a fair few KMs on them.
I agree with the expensive brands, they are not always the best. I seem to prefer your run of the mill Nikes as long as it has a high impact cushion on the sole.
Sorry can't advise on where to buy. I haven't been able to get back to Thailand for almost a year now....

The heat seems to quickly degrade the materials and the adhesives used to stick the various components of the shoe together.

I have had brand name trainers in the UK that have lasted for years, but once exposed to the Thai heat they fall apart after a few months. The soles detach from the body of the uppers, the lace-holes tear and the fabric deteriorates.

Now I leave my good stuff in the UK and buy the most comfortable unbranded trainers I can find in the Thai shoe shops.

They fall to pieces just as quickly, but can be replaced for a third of the cost.

Thanks to all of you for the info.

Yup, glue loses adhesion and rubber perishes.

I was walking today and the sole fell off.

Can you not have them stitched back on? I posted here a couple of years ago about my Crocs. The soles fell off them whilst beach walking. Mrs BB took them to the local shoe repairer. For a few Baht, they were restored as new. In fact better than new. They are still perfect now.

it will take the same amount of time to go buy the glue as it will the shoes and afterward I'll still have to go buy the shoes but, I do appreciate the info.

BTW there was no way I ever thought they could be repaired, but I was very wrong.

I have two divergent experiences.

I purchased some really nice-looking shoes from vendors in Bangkok that I took back to Australia and literally lasted me only a handful of wears before degrading.
Then I also purchase a pair of bata 'power' sandals from local malls that have lasted years - I mean i literally wore through the soles.

Crocs are a different material than running shoes and aren't stitchable. I don't mind buying a cheap pair of shoes and replacing them when necessary. I'm too old to fuss with anything.

No we have had trainers done as well. These guys can stitch through surprisingly thick soles.
I think BB is using the same guy - the one by the railway crossing at soi 70.

Ok, I'll give him a try.
