I think he may mean the big blue buses that leave for many places from Ekamai bus terminal on Sukhumvit.

According to this link there doesn't appear to be any big blue bus service from Ekkamai to Hua Hin.
Aranyaprathet (Cambodia border): Buses depart at 07:00, 08:30, 10:00, 12:00 and 16:00 for 200 baht and take five hours. Minibuses depart hourly from 05:00 to 17:00 for 220 baht. Most of these stop at the bus station in Aranyaprathet before continuing to the border crossing at Rong Khlua Market.
Ban Phe (Ko Samet piers): Buses depart every 1.5 hours from 07:00 to 17:00 for 155 baht and take four hours. Minibuses depart hourly from 07:00 to 20:00 for 200 baht.
Bang Saen: Minibuses depart hourly from 05:00 to 20:00 for 100 baht and take two hours.
Chachoengsao: Minibuses depart hourly from 05:00 to 20:00 for 100 baht and take two hours.
Chanthaburi: Buses depart at 06:30, 10:30 and 14:30 for 184 baht and take four to five hours. Trat-bound buses also stop in Chanthaburi.
Chonburi: Minibuses depart hourly from 06:00 to 20:00 for 67 baht and take two hours.
Hua Hin: Minibuses depart hourly from 06:00 to 19:00 for 180 baht and take four hours, with stops in Phetchaburi and Cha-am.
Laem Ngop (Ko Chang and Ko Maak piers): Buses depart at 07:45 and 09:00 for 240 baht and take six hours. Make a transfer in Trat if you miss these buses.
Mae Khlong (Samut Songkhram): Minibuses depart every 40 minutes from 06:00 to 20:00 for 90 baht and take two hours, with a stop at Mahachai (Samut Sakhon). At Mae Khlong you can transfer to Amphawa Floating Market.

I thought those buses to Hua Hin originated at the Southern Bus Terminal on Boromratchachonanee Road?

Yes, further checking indicated the big blue buses south originate from there. Ekkamai on soi 63 Sukhumvit just has the mini bus service to HH it appears.

I remember taking a small bus/large van last June from HH approx soi 94 on the main road to Ekamai and return.

Yes, as finally agreed, there is a van service from Ekkamai to Hua Hin. My other half has used it regularly. I often drop her niece there to catch a bus to Chonburi.
