Exploding Lightbulb

Post by handdrummer »

What can cause a lightbulb to explode when the switch is turned on?
The bulb has been in place at least 8 yrs and probably closer to 10.

Power surge or loose connection/short in the wiring.

Loose Connections: Sometimes, a lightbulb will explode because of a loose connection between the bulb and the socket. When the bulb connection is loose, electricity may hop from the bulb's metal contact, instead of flowing through it. ... When this happens, gas can leak out of the bulb, resulting in an explosion.Jun 1, 2563 BE

Thanks. Power surge is most likely cause. The base of the bulb, still in the socket, is so tight I can't remove it.

It's interesting that this could happen perhaps right when viewtopic.php?f=1&t=39936&p=529911#p529911 was happening.

I think handdrummer lives in a part of Hua Hin unaffected by that outage.

Right, I live in Smorprong and it's not our turn for another outage.

Out of curiosity, what type of bulb was it? Incandescent, cfl or led?

The OP said it was 8-10 years old so I’d guess it was incandescent?

I don't know, it was here before I moved in and after the explosion I couldn't tell.
