CP Group says Dhanin is a Thai national, not Chinese; threatens lawsuits
The Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group) said in a press release that its chairman and founder Dhanin Chearavanont holds only Thai nationality, rather than Chinese nationality, as rumoured on social media over the past week.

The company also warned of legal action against spreading misinformation.

“Dhanin is Thai as he was born in Thailand and holds Thai nationality,” said the statement.

Thai internet users had been sharing, over the past week, a story from a Chinese-language outlet saying Dhanin has changed his nationality to Chinese. Most of them had removed their posts due to concern over legal issues.

The CP Group is one of Thailand’s largest conglomerations. It has attracted numerous controversies with monopolistic and anti-competition behavior.

Forbes Magazine reported that the Chearavanont family’s wealth has increased by almost 100 Billion Baht over the past two years despite the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Big C is still around and always Lazada so not stuck. When I order things in the U.S. (to be sent to me by friends) I also avoid Amazon whenever possible. Monopolies are not good for the consumer. Just try to purchase designer eye glass frames and $5 cost to make becomes over $100 at the stores.

CP's grip is on food - one report I read said that the company controlled as much as 80% of Thailand's food supply, and of course its prices. No wonder the family has made billions since Covid began.
