Lake View golf course rating

Post by thecolonel »

Lake View appears to be the only course in Hua Hin not to have a Course rating/Slope Index as per World Handicap System requirements

Its odd as the other courses do in Hua Hin and almost all the other golf areas in Thailand

Any members on here(or others) know why??

http://www.tga.or.th/tga2013/#p=601

TIA

Ps I have sent an email to the Thai Golf Association asking them why not

I did hear that Lakeview were the only club not to have their courses officially assessed for Slope Rating, and when they enquired about having this done they were quoted Bht1 million ( I do not know if this was one course or both courses as they have 36 holes), anyway too expensive I guess!

I believe the Thai Golf Association requires this but perhaps Lakeview are not members.

TrueHandicap and probably several other handicap apps out there do have Course- and Slope Ratings for Lake View. These were probably invented based on the other courses in Hua Hin. I mailed the manager of Lake View about this around a year ago. I never got a reply.

I'm sure it would have been for all of the four 9 hole 'courses' as this is required as you may need to play AC not just AB etc. So you could say about £11,000 per 18 hole course so as to compare with say Banyan, Sea Pines or Palm Hills paid.

Anyone who are members of those courses know what they paid?

It still sounds expensive to me as its just a group of scratch or better players playing there for a day. Then they sit down afterwards to review the holes(off the various tees) assess bunkering, slopes, water hazards general difficulty etc and then compare them to ratings for Springfield, Black Mountain, Palm Hills etc which they've already done.

The other point is that most Lake View memberships expire at the end of 2022. But there are some rare memberships that expire on 1 Jan '27 as one was sold on here recently.

Maybe that has something to do with their decision not to have it done???

Yes must be an estimate.

If you have it could you advise what they are for the AB course please?

Thanks

Thanks 'Harry'!

I do however find some of those course ratings bizzare

Eg White tees AB 70
But White tees BC 72

Suggesting that C white is a lot harder than A white nb for the *scratch golfer(average best 50%)*

Also slope is lower for AC white than AB white which I know is possible but hardly makes sense.

So as a 7.0 handicap I would get a playing handicap of 5 for White AB but 7 for White AC, an extra 2 shots, 40% more!

Personally I think that's just crazy nonsense but there you go. I've played a lot of golf at LV and off those white tees too. I now play further back at most courses (as I need more shots! Image). I simply fail to see how a scratch would find C harder than A off whites. Can't speak for 'longer' tees at LV but can at some other courses

However nonetheless I'm very grateful for the info, cheers Image

I agree that these ratings are rubbish. If Lake View is not willing to invest in proper ratings then maybe some of the societies could put pressure on them to "invent" some more realistic ratings. In an hours meeting a few experienced golfers could easily come up with ratings that are more or less realistic!

Agree, especially when doing a simple comparison to the other courses already rated.

Also clubs like Lake View need to be aware that some golfers/societies won't play non rated courses as won't count for handicap therefore they'll go and play elsewhere.

Furthermore, I played LV off the tips (Blue tees) yesterday

According to those ratings they say LV is easier by 1 full shot for the scratch player(72.2) versus Springfield(73.2 Gold tees). Even taking account of average best 50%. I completely disagree with this rating.

Whilst I accept Springfield is longer I don't think the relative distances would bother a scratch golfer so the difference is negligible. I certainly didn't feel LV was in anyway shorter.

But what is significant to me is that in my opinion the greens at LV are harder than SPR to make putts on and to avoid 3 putts. And that is the key for a scratch golfer, as that is where they will lose/gain shots, not off the tee.

Equally I would say around the green shots are about the same, but the bunkers at LV are harder. Why? Because they are in poor condition. And that never seems to be taken into account by these 'raters' whoever they are!

Any golfer worth his or her salt will tell you it's easier to play a good bunker shot if the bunker is in good condition. And overall Springfield bunkers are better kept than LV's where they seem to have just given up in many places.

Also LV's greens are smaller on average and therefore the scratch golfer will miss say 2 more greens per round.

So again I would argue that LV Blue Course Rating should be at the least equal to SPR gold.

And the Slope Rating (128)should be equal or higher to SPR(130)too as the 10 handicap golfer will find the greens more of a challenge. I definitely 3 putt more at LV than SPR

(The greens at SPR are currently awful but that's down to maintenance and is hopefully temporary)

Harry,

Just spotted that as re A/C the ratings for Blue and yellow tees are the same??

Is that a typo on your part perhaps?

If not that's more than a bit odd!

Can you check your app please?

Many Thanks

I see that Truehandicap have recently changed all the ratings for Lakeview so I suggest you look them up. eg AB White was I think 113 and is now 121etc

Certainly the slope ratings look more accurate

But the course ratings (ie scratch player) are a joke

AB white 72
AB yellow also 72... 426 yds longer!
AB black 72.5... Half a shot for 720 yards longer

Yeah right!

These are by far and away the smallest differentials in course ratings for various tee lengths that I've ever seen, and by quite some distance

Some perspective..... the difference in Course ratings between the front mens tees and back tees at Springfield is 3.6 shots(for a very similar difference in distance 750 yds approx) They say Lake View is half a shot!

Farcical!

I will contact True Handicap and tell them this is a clear error.

The course- and slope ratings on True Handicap have indeed been updated and are now in line with the other local courses. The new indices for men are:
A/B: Blue (72.5/131), Yellow (72/126), White (72/121) & Red (70/113)
A/C: Blue (72.5/129), Yellow (72/125), White (72/121) & Red (70/114)
A/D: Blue (72.5/128), Yellow (72/125), White (72/121) & Red (67/106)
B/C: Blue (72.5/130), Yellow (72/129), White (72/121) & Red (71/114)
B/D: Blue (73/130), Yellow (72.5/127), White (72/120) & Red (72/113)
C/D: Blue (73/133), Yellow (72.5/130), White (72/125) & Red (72/118)

A/D Red does not seem to have been updated. I have reported this to TrueHandicap

Lake View AB White (6195 yds) is shorter than Springfield white(6285)

Both par 72

How on earth can Springfield white be fully 2.4 shots easier for the scratch player (average of best 50%) than Lake View White?

They are extremely similar golf courses in many ways.

The slope ratings are extremely close 121 LV vs 119 Spr

But the course ratings difference is laughably incorrect!

Personally I think Springfield's(white) CR of 69.6 is too low

I think most people overestimate the skill level of 'scratch' golfers. They don't always shoot level par or less. They often shoot 3 or 4 over. They're not tour pros or +5 handicaps! They don't tear the courses to pieces

Incidentally a +5 handicap at my club in UK shot 3 over par in a club comp there last week. Don't forget as an elite player his +5 handicap is based on scores on the best (and hardest) courses around the N West of England and beyond. So it's tough for him to get that low. And he shot 75 net 80 at his home course!!
