Actually those bridges weren't constructed because the road collapsed. The road was cut through in various places to allow the water out to the sea. Following that the road was rebuilt with several aquaducts to prevent it happening again.
I remember that. The only way to get around downtown for about a week was by boat! All the side sois were raging torrents, people were fishing with nets in them!

We had a "100-year flood" in Bangsaphan in December 2016 and then again a month later in January. They've since put some defenses in which saved the town from flooding in November 2021, and hopefully will again this year.

Climate change affects different places in different ways, Thailand will get flooding pretty much every year now to some degree I would imagine.

The price of prawns hit rock bottom that week. The prawn farms had all overflowed and people were out with trawl nets getting them for free!

Chadchart takes flak for freak floods in city

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... ds-in-city

The heavy downpours on Wednesday night that crippled much of Bangkok have unleashed a torrent of criticism and counter-criticism of Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt's ability to fight the city's flooding problems.

Many of the city's roads were swamped after heavy rain that lasted for several hours. In some areas, the floodwater remained until Thursday morning.

Mr Chadchart admitted it was the heaviest rain since he won the governor election on May 22. He apologised for not acting quickly enough to deal with the widespread floods.

The governor said up to 160 millimetres of rain fell in Bangkok on Wednesday night, causing waterways, particularly Klong Lat Phrao, Klong Saen Saep, Klong Tan and Klong Phra Khanong, to rise rapidly.

Household rubbish waiting for collection had clogged drainage pipes.

The floods sent social media abuzz with comments both criticising and defending Mr Chadchart over his handling of the situation.

Observers warned Mr Chadchart that the floods could chip away at his popularity if the problem was not seen to be promptly or sufficiently contained.

Taking to his Facebook account, vocal activist Srisuwan Janya said in a sarcastic tone that Mr Chadchart stood every chance of rising above any criticism of his handling of one of Bangkok's heaviest floods this year, given his tremendous capability.

The governor should take it easy on his publicity stunt campaigns for a while and get down to the business of tackling the floods, said Mr Srisuwan who earlier accused Mr Chadchart of vote-buying by letting people collect his vinyl election campaign posters that could be converted into shopping bags or aprons and sold online.

But TV show host Lakkana Panwichai, better known as Kham Phaka, came out in Mr Chadchart's defence. Posting on her Facebook page, she said the floods stemmed from faulty city planning and that the problem could not be solved overnight.

She said the governor deserved praise for inspecting issues that affect the city.

Srisuwan Janya https://www.thaipbsworld.com/srisuwan-j ... r-society/ Once a crusader for good, now it's anyone's guess.

If you see that guy's name associated with anything these days, file it in the trash. He thinks he's of great importance to the survival of this country. Similar to what some medics seem to be doing concerning Covid. Once with power and notoriety it's terribly addictive, and for some impossible to give up.

Dam release spurs flood warnings

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... d-warnings

Riverside residents in 11 provinces are being told to closely monitor water levels and prepare for possible flooding as the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) will discharge more water from Chao Phraya dam in Chai Nat to accommodate runoff from the North.

The warning, issued by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, is for Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Suphan Buri, Ayutthaya, Lop Buri, Phathum Thani, Nonthaburi and Bangkok. It was triggered by the RID's plan to discharge water from the Chao Phraya dam at a rate of 850 to 1,000 cubic metres (m³) per second to accommodate heavy rain and runoff from the North which is predicted to flow at a rate of 1,050-1,150 m³ per second tomorrow.

The discharge rate will raise the water level downstream by 60-80 centimetres. If there is more water from the North, the amount of water flowing from the Chao Phraya dam will exceed 1,000 m³ per second from tomorrow onward.

Those living along the banks of Chao Phraya River and in low-lying areas outside flood embankments are being urged to keep a close watch on water levels and move their belongings to high grounds.

Local authorities are also being instructed to strengthen flood embankments and dispatch officials and equipment -- such as water pumps and rescue boats -- to help those that could be affected by floods.

Meanwhile, residents in Nakhon Ratchasima are also being urged to brace for possible inundation as water levels in the province's reservoirs are dangerously high.

Governor Vichien Chantaranothai said a flood alert has been sent to those living close to rivers because all reservoirs hold large amounts of water and more rain is predicted this week.

Mr Vichien further said the water level in five medium-sized reservoirs exceeds holding capacity and the excessive water is being discharged into waterways under close supervision to avoid flooding farms and riverside communities. The governor said the province's four large reservoirs -- Lam Takhong, Lam Phraphloeng, Lam Mun Bon and Lam Sae -- are holding water at about 60% of storage capacity.

Deputy director-general of RID Taweesak Tanadechopol also warned that due to the effects of the monsoon trough over the Northern, Northeastern and upper Central regions of Thailand and strong Southwestern monsoon over the Andaman Sea, there will be heavy rain over the upper part of the country, which will result in a further influx of water into the Chao Phraya River Basin in the coming days which will heighten flood risks along the river.

Flooding chaos in Phuket

https://thethaiger.com/news/phuket/floo ... -in-phuket

Yes, Thailand’s monsoon season is still here, and Phuket has been hit by the latest round of flooding chaos. After heavy rain poured down on the island province, cars were slowly driving through high floods in the main city district yesterday. Many people have come to Phuket for the long holiday weekend, which has added to the traffic problems.

Traffic police helped direct the grumpy drivers through the effected areas, which included: Thep Kasattri Road in front of the Thai Wassadu mall, Sri Soonthorn Road in Thalang, Thep Kasattri Road in front of Muslim Wittaya Phuket, Soi Pha Neang, and Pracha Uthi Road in front of the Tawee Saman Market. Luckily, no damages or injuries from from the floods have been reported so far.

Floods have wreaked havoc across Thailand for the past few weeks. On July 20, Bangkok saw a record-breaking rainfall of 132.5mm, surpassing the earlier record of 108mm on July 30th, 1955. Over 100mm of rain poured into Khlong Toei and Bang Na, the central districts of Bangkok.

Traffic in the Wattana business district was also crawling yesterday morning as both cars and foot traffic had to wade through the draining waters. Passenger taxi boats in the east-west running Saen Saeb canal were also suspended with the water level rising so much that the boats were unable to pass under some of the lower bridges.

Phuket’s wettest months are September and October, so the province can surely expect more flooding chaos to come.

Flash flood warning due to heavy rains in 38 provinces

https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/weather ... -provinces

Heavy rains have been battering various parts of Thailand and are expected to continue into August. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation announced today that 38 provinces in the Kingdom are under flash flood warnings all this week.

The flash flood warnings from heavy rains are in effect in the North, Northeast, Central, East and South regions of the country. A strong southwestern monsoon is sprawled across the area, stretching all the way from the Andaman Sea to the Gulf of Thailand, crossing the entirety of the country.

The Disaster Department is suggesting everyone keep a close eye on developing weather reports, and for those living near bodies of water such as rivers and reservoirs, the department urges them to watch the water levels closely to avoid being caught unprepared for a flash flood.

Should an emergency arise, 1784 is the 24-hour hotline for the DDPM, and they can also be reached by the LINE app on the account @1784DDPM.

Flood Alert

Flood alerts have been issued in 11 provinces, including Bangkok, after severe runoff unleashed by Tropical Storm Mulan flowed downstream from the North, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

The alarm was sounded in Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Suphan Buri, Ayutthaya, Lop Buri, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan and Bangkok.

The department also said it was now keeping a close eye on the steadily swelling Chao Phraya River which receives water from the northern provinces where Mulan had triggered widespread floods.

Similar warnings are also in effect in areas on the banks of the Noi River which is a tributary of the Chao Phraya.

Residents living in communities dotted along both riverbanks were advised to be ready to move to higher ground, while nearby construction sites were told to reinforce their foundations for fear of ensuing landslides.

Riverside restaurants, piers and fish farms should brace for a rapid surge in water levels, the department said, as they are particularly at risk.

The Chao Phraya dam has increased its discharge to between 1,000-1,400 cubic metres of water per second, but also has the knock-on effect of raising levels in downstream provinces by 20-60cm. Expected to be severely hit are low-lying areas outside the flood walls in Klong Phong Pheng in Ang Thong as well Klong Bang Ban, tambon Hua Wiang of Sena district and Phak Hai district where the Noi cuts through Ayutthaya.

Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt said the situation is under control after there were no heavy downpours on Friday.

City Hall chief said the level at the Chao Phraya dam in Chai Nat was now under close surveillance as that has a direct effect on the volume of water flowing into the capital

In Chiang Rai, Mulan has caused runoff from the forest in tambon Ban Doo in Muang district, leading to flooded sections of Phahon Yothin Road which leads into Mae Chan and Mae Sai districts. The road remains partially closed to small vehicles.

Many homes and farmland were also flooded in tambon Ban Doo.

In Phayao, floodwater reached one metre in several areas of Phu Sang district and caused damaged property, homes and cars in at least 10 villages.

In nearby Chiang Mai, a landslide was reported in Mae Ai district after the heavy rainfall.

7 north-eastern provinces bracing for Mekong River overflows until Thursday

https://www.thaipbsworld.com/7-north-ea ... -thursday/

Thailand’s National Water Command Centre is advising people living near the banks of the Mekong River in seven north-eastern provinces to brace for sudden overflows from today (Sunday) until Thursday.

The centre said that heavy rain, triggered by Tropical Depression Mulan on August 11th and 12th in the Luang Prabang area of the Lao PDR, has substantially increased the volume of water flowing through the Xayaburi run-of-river hydroelectric dam, causing the level of the downstream Mekong River to rise steadily.

The centre predicts that the level of the Mekong River, flowing through Thailand’s north-eastern provinces of Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen and Ubon Ratchathani, will rise by up to 2 metres between now and Thursday, which may lead to sudden flooding.

Flooding in 11 northern and north-eastern provinces, as a result of heavy rain triggered by Mulan, has mostly subsided, with the exception of Bo Kluea, Thung Chang, Muang and Tha Wang Pha districts of the northernmost province of Nan, where the flood situation is expected to return to normal in a couple of days.

In Mae Sai border district of Chiang Rai province, residents in flooded communities in the municipal area started cleaning the ground floors of their houses today, after flood water hadmostly receded.

Several residents complained of damage to their wooden furniture, wooden doors and some electrical appliances, which they could not move to higher ground. Electricity and water supplies remain cut-off.

The district electricity authority decided to cut supply yesterday for safety, when the Sai River breached the flood wall and inundated four communities in the municipal area and about 200 shops, as well as several roads.

Several housing estates in low-lying areas, however, remain inundated. Municipal officials said they expect to complete maintenance of the breached flood wall today.

The Department of Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, meanwhile, reported that over 5,000 households in 11 northern, north-eastern and eastern provinces sustainedflooding damage between Thursday and yesterday. One person died, but there were no other injuries reported.
