It just needs somebody to market Hua Hin correctly.
Just 200km down the road, we've had six-month wet seasons for the past two years!

Tourists want the sun, not pissing rain every day and floods.

I know, I think we have a HHTel effect here. In comparison, we get nothing - it's incredible.

Flooding expanding in central Chiang Mai

https://www.bangkokpost.com/photo/24059 ... chiang-mai

CHIANG MAI: Flooding was expanding in the heart of Chiang Mai as the overflowing Ping River continued to the rise amid persistent rain on Monday.

About 1,000 households in Muang district were inundated after the Ping River burst its banks on Sunday night. The flood continued on Monday morning. Nearby residents were being advised to move their belongings to high ground.

Although sandbags were stacked up along the banks of the Ping River, water sprang up from sewers in the municipal area of Muang district.

The level of the Ping River at Nawarat Bridge was 4.52 metres, which was 0.82 metres above its safe level. The river in this section was rising.

The situation was approaching the severe flooding of 2011, when the level of the Ping River neared 5 metres. Local officials expected a similar situation because water from tributaries upstream continued to flow into the Ping River.

The river receives water from the Mae Taeng River and the Mae Rim River.

The water was up to a metre deep in some areas of Muang district and residents were evacuated. Several schools and government offices were closed on Monday due to flooding. They were largely on Chang Khlan and Charoen Prathet roads, but also in Pa Phrao Nok and Nong Hoi areas.

Elsewhere in the province, steady rain continued in Chiang Dao, Mae Taeng, Mae Rim, Mae Ai, Fang, San Sai and Doi Saket districts - all upstream of Muang district.

Water retention, diversion to protect Bangkok from flood

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon has ordered that the flood surging downriver from the North be retained in upstream provinces, and also be diverted to a canal to the east of Bangkok, to protect the capital from flooding.

Gen Prawit, who is in charge of water management, issued the order during a trip to see the situation first hand in Chai Nat and Ayutthaya provinces on Monday.

He said the amount of rainwater moving downstream was close to that which caused severe flooding in 2011. He had ordered officials to limit flooding in the lower basin of the Chao Phraya River, which includes Greater Bangkok.

Gen Prawit said the deluge would be directed to low-lying areas in provinces upstream, including Nakhon Sawan, to limit the volume of water flowing down the Chao Phraya River through Greater Bangkok.

Water would also be discharged from the Pa Sak River into the Raphiphat Canal east of Bangkok and thence to the sea, he said. The Pa Sak River adjoins the Chao Phraya River in Ayutthaya province.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation on Monday reported flooding in parts of Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Buri Ram, Chai Nat, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Lampang, Lamphun, Nan, Nakhon Ratchasima, Pathum Thani, Phetchabun, Phichit, Phrae, Prachin Buri, Si Sa Ket, Sing Buri, Sukhothai, Tak, Ubon Ratchathani and Uttaradit provinces.

It's like the flooding in Bangkok is getting worse each year. One might wonder what it would be like 20-30 years from now? Maybe best to stay/live outside Bangkok?!

Not just Bangkok - it doesn't seem like much of Thailand is escaping the rains/floods at the moment (well ... aside from Hua Hin).

Large swathes of it will be uninhabitable if there is a sudden sea level rise, even inland places due to the prolonged wet seasons and annual flooding.

There is an underlying tone of panic now coming from Bangkok and central government officials concerning what is coming south towards them.

I think the country in that north/south corridor has reached the limit of what they can do so not to be overwhelmed, especially if the storms continue as forecast.

When you start to see journalists drawing comparisons to 2011 it is indeed time to worry. :(

It's OK, Prawit has issued an order telling them to stop the surge. https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... from-surge

He must think he's King Canute, and will have just as much chance of success.
