The fines are now sufficient to act as a deterrent - if only the BIB can get out there to enforce them, the roads might become a relatively safe place!!

The last traffic fines I had were all camera surveilance. I was caught speeding on highway 4 and going through a red light in the middle of Hua Hin, both 500 Baht fines. Paying 4,000 Baht is definitely a bit of a deterent.
I suppose the police personal 'fines' will go up as well.

One problem I foresee is if they get greedy, silly question right? If they start hitting people up for 4,000 Baht speeding fines for 5kph or less over the limit via their camera surveillance, they will have a revolution on their hands and thousands of unpaid fines.

My only advice to them concerning speeding is to be careful about how they implement all of this.

Driving without a licence is up to one year imprisonment. Already a hefty penalty.
I remember that from my theory test last week.
I very much doubt anyone is jailed though. The lessor sentence of a fine maybe (can’t remember if 2,000 or 5,000thb!?). Probably one of the ones I got wrong.

To stop the driving backward, someone is going to have to teach Thais how to make a 3-point turn. Or is that only for highway driving?

As usual, announced then retracted.
Hike on traffic fines delayed

Writing news in Thailand frequently means announcing something and then the next day announcing the opposite. And true to form, the new major hike in penalty fines for traffic violations announced before the weekend and scheduled to go into effect yesterday… have been retracted. But when they do go into effect, repeat offenders will be further penalised, and a new system will ensure fines are consistent across all of Thailand.

Saying that more time is required to properly get the word out about the new fees, the deputy director of the Royal Thai Police’s Traffic Operations Centre announced that they will not go into effect for another three months. During that time, teams of police officers will set out to raise awareness of the new stiffer fines for traffic violations.
