Downloading music

Post by Dannie Boy »

I’m sure this has been asked before but a quick search didn’t find what I was looking for.
In the past I have used Spotify and more recently Amazon music, to listen when I’m driving. Recently, Amazon have changed their policy on playing music offline unless you pay for their premium Unlimited service at about £100 a year.

Can anybody recommend a site I can use to download music (mp3?) files, so that I can put them on a USB drive and plug that into my car? Thanks

We generally just use Pirate Bay - same as movie downloads.

Some of the more obscure stuff we get from YouTube and convert i.e. my son likes some really obscure stuff, and while you can find it on download sites, there are no seeders.

Have been using Soulseek, its a P2P client a bit like the old Napster or Audiogalaxy. Very little you can't find on it - was recommended in the torrents thread: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=16137&hilit=Soulseek&start=251

If you're on torrent websites check out PMEDIA - they have thousands of albums in high-quality MP3 and FLAC.

https://www.limetorrents.lol/search/music/PMEDIA/

Search for 'PMEDIA+whatever album/artist you want'

Gave up on YouTube ripping because the audio quality was poor which is noticeable on a decent speaker(s).

Thanks for the replies - yes I have a VPN so hopefully I’ll be able to find a range of music from what has been suggested.

I never listen to the stuff I do for my son, and he only ever plays it on his phone.

I will try Soulseek the next time he asks for something really obscure. Thank you.

I've just tried to get The Pride by INME, but it's trying to sell me Ray Ban sunglasses. What is the secret to searching using Soulseek please. I've tried putting search parameters inside quotation marks.

[Edit] Maybe not sell, but..................

You've downloaded the SS client to your computer I take it?

Once done you have to share a folder with music to be nice to others - it is peer-2-peer, not a torrent website so you're getting stuff directly from other people.

Just did a search and the album came up several times.

OMG, how do I share a folder with music? It's starting to sound a bit complicated to download some obscure music. I'm nice, but don't have a clue - there doesn't seem to be any instruction.

I’m also struggling because I have little patience and a similar amount of IT skills so find the whole thing frustrating.

I opened up the limetorrents link that Buks provided, it opens up like this
Image
I then click on a track and this pops up
Image
And I tried it again and it opened with Lazada!!

I’m sure this is why I gave up downloading films and TV series using pirate bay and others a few years ago!!

Use Brave browser - it blocks all the ads - I don't see any of that (but I've never tried downloading torrents on a phone).

Soulseek is a piece of software you run on your PC to enable you to share a folder of music and to download from folders others have shared. Couldn't be simpler, but you need to download it first: https://www.slsknet.org/news/node/1

FAQ: https://www.slsknet.org/news/faq-page

If you download a lot of music as I do, it is a godsend.

Ok thanks Buks - I’ll fire up my laptop later and give it a try.

Well, I'm not sure how I did it (yet), but I didn't (knowingly) share anything, and The Pride has arrived on my laptop.

You don't have to share, but if you don't, the amount you can search for will be limited as many users won't share with those that haven't reciprocated.

I've managed to download a couple of obscure ones, and understand the download process now - quite easy. I'll try to manage without sharing for now. He only asks for oddballs occasionally. For the other stuff, Torrents are a lot faster anyway.

Soulseek is a very useful tool to have in the box - thank you.
