Yes. The mean depth across the whole of the gulf is 58 mtrs, the deepest part being 85 mtrs. The main reason that the old king stopped development of a raised highway from Samut Songkram to Chumpon (I think). Driving pillars into the sea bed would release masses of mercury and would kill the marine life.

It is claimed here that there were not enough life jackets on board. I have seen that claim also posted elsewhere. The same report is posting that the seas were "choppy"!

This seems to be in line with my observations on life rafts also. I've looked at many photographs, but can only see 2 life raft containers on each side of the ship. These containers seem to be much smaller than the rafts I've been used to. So unlikely they would have provided sufficient support.

While sailing with insufficient lifejackets shows an appalling lack of regard for the safety of those on board it only serves to distract from the cause of the flooding which we are unlikely to find out. The big question is why was the water ingress allowed to occur in the first place. Assuming the vessel had a lot of watertight doors why were they not closed in rough seas. Without knowledge of the vessel layout or how rigid operating guidelines were followed it is difficult to know what happened. One can only guess and it is unlikely that any Navy would tell the true story.

One could argue that the majority of comments made on the forum which criticize the way the powers that be do things in Thailand are a waste of time if the writer thinks it may help change things. Not a waste of time though to reassure others that they are not alone in caring about what happens to others and perhaps enabling those interested to get a better picture of not just what happened but why.
It is tragic that lives have likely been lost due to not having enough life jackets but who allowed the ship to sail with the shortage. Were the extra people on board trained how to respond to an incident. Was any abandon ship or safety briefing given before sailing, all things that are mandatory on many commercial ships. Equally the flooding could be due to a heavy item on deck shifting due to the weather and breaking a vent (Braer incident I think) or bulkhead resulting in flooding. Just as in the investigation into corruption that the government never published it is unlikely that truth will prevail. Perhaps a pessimistic approach but often the best one here.
The comments in the thread have proved useful to get a better picture and allow people to make their own conclusions, as a mariner I am interested to know not just what but why this tragedy occurred and just doubt if that will happen.

Those that live near the beach here have been a little concerned about what might start to wash up on it. However, the search area is further south in BS Noi and Patiew.

More ducking and diving, but not on the wreck!
It is utter crap to claim that the water entered through an exhaust pipe! The vessel has 2 BIG diesel engines, water does not flow into them through the exhaust pipe while they are running. Not mentioned, but it may also have had a couple of seperate generators, one of which is requried by law to be installed above the waterline.
In any case, the volume and rapid ingress of enough water to capsize the ship did not occur without warning, nor by any other means than a BIG hole. Mention is made again of the sea state, which a ship of this class SHOULD have had no problem handling.

These are the same people that want a submarine!

B200 m to salvage HTMS Sukhothai

Adm Choengchai said initial findings suggested water entered the ship during the storm, forcing it to sink. However, the investigation has yet to be completed as it also requires the vessel to be bought ashore.
