Christmas Pudding

Post by PeteC »

A bit early for this, but I may forget if I wait?!

Saw a BBC show about these this morning and realized I've never had one in my life. Is the packaged variety sold in Thailand, and do any of the big hotels or restaurants serve the homemade variety during the holiday season? That would include Bangkok as well if anyone knows.

Watching that show with puddings from places like the Ritz in London I think you would be flat on your arse from all the booze in it and not even remember what the pudding tasted like!

The commercial varieties will only have a sniff of alcohol in them, but I still enjoy eating them.

In Hua Hin I think AP foods have done them in the past at their normal inflationary prices but that’s the price for anything traditional for Xmas.

I’ve not had Xmas dinner at any of the hotels but would imagine some of them would serve Xmas puddings.

You can normally get the packaged types in places such as Villa Market. I usually get the home-made variety from HHH&B each year with my other festive treats.

I remember as a kid, I used to hate it, but always insisted on a big piece in the hope of finding the silver sixpence inside. Absolutely love it these days.

I imagine the commercial packaged variety doesn't have that in it? Perhaps a symbol like a piece of silver or gold foil?

Again, part of the HHH&B Christmas fayre - certainly not the cheapest, but very nice.

I've bought mince pies and Christmas pudding from Nany's, but I'm sure there are other places. As far as alcohol goes, a good soaking of brandy before setting it alight helps.

The alternative is to serve it with a good brandy sauce.

Had Christmas lunch at Anantasila Hua Hin last year where they served an excellent Xmas pudding among loads of other goodies 😊

AP Interfoods generally have them all year round. :D

Central food halls and TOPs in Bkk will sell mince pies and Chrsitmas Pud from Waitrose and M&S. Don't think they will reach Hua Hin, like much of the farang offerings from that store. I do find that odd. Alternatively, M&S will sell them at their own outlets. I know of two in Bkk - at Cental Chit Lom (connected to the BTS of the same name) and at Central World, 10 minutes walk away.

The 'essential' i.e. cheap mince pies from Waitrose aren't worth bothering with, anything else is, but at a once a year treat, price.

I think Daves mince pies at HHH&B are excellent, as BB states, and it used to be that he sold chilled and frozen over the Christmas period, but when I called in last year, before going to Bkk for Christmas, he had already comppletely sold out, so don't leave it late, or I guess order in advance. I am not sure what the minimum order will be?

I don't think there's any minimum order quantity for products at HHH&B at Christmas. You just need to order before the cut-off date. My order goes in on 1st November each year to avoid disappointment.
