After 15 years in Finland, I haven't met these beasties. The first ones I ever met were in 1987 when I studied in Guangzhou. Now some of them have been around in my kitchen and today I purchased some spray to kill the odd one I haven't been able to dispose otherwise. How do you get rid of the roaches, I know they are around in HH as well? I'd prefer not to use the spray. Even if one keeps they apartment clean, they can come from the neighboring areas.

They eat all kind of things but I've never heard of them eating cockroaches. Would you be so kind and tell if you have any real stories of Thais eating roaches. Thank you.

When in China, we always saw a fair few - especially in the tower blocks. The readily available "Glue Traps" always worked well (also used for flies et al), but a 1:1 mixture of sugar and baking soda in a dish of water also worked well - they are attracted by the sugar but are ultimately killed by the (poisonous) soda...

I'm sure, you realize this is not quite the same thing as eating roaches which have been living, walking and eating in dirty places.

I realise that. Just showing that eating insects is more common than people realise. Of course you wouldn't eat the 'household' roaches.
However rats, even sewer rats are eaten in some places despite the risk of disease.

But I'll stick to a full English and a good steak!

I had problems with them when I lived in Indonesia and found that insecticide chalk that they sell in Asia to be quite effective. You draw lines around anywhere they can get in and they die after crossing it, it's good for stopping ants as well.
Also blocking up any small gaps with silicon sealant if they're coming in through pipe and cable access points in apartments.

Some experts have said that after a complete worldwide nuclear holocaust, the mighty cockroach will be one of the few surviving species. How lovely!

Well cockroaches have been around for 300+ million years and survived so I'm sure a nuclear holocaust wouldn't kill them unless it turned them on their back!!!

They can even survive for a week or so without a head and eventually die of starvation!

Not sure if you were joking but no, they don't. They eat another bug that looks quite similar (maleng da), but they don't eat the common household cokroaches (maleng sap).

No they don't eat the ones found in the house.

They do cook with cockroaches in Thailand. They use the body fluid as a spice.

I remember travelling through Cambodia in the mid nineties.
Once stopped at a rather sparse but newly built 2 storey apartment block.
Upon returning to the room in the evening (worse for wear) I noticed big paint pots, the ones you get the emulsion paint in...
Well, they were all pretty much full to the top with what looked like water, there was one also in my room.
Woke up in the middle of the night for a toilet break, turned on the light and was shocked to see how many were in the pots, some still crawling around on the floor.
I assume they added something to the water to attract them?
