Soi Fire Extinguishers

Post by Big Boy »

A rare occurrence, but I walked down my Soi yesterday. When I got to the end I noticed somebody has randomly put up a box containing 2 fire extinguishers.

There is nothing noticeably nearby worth extinguishing if it was on fire. I've put the photo through the translator, and it translates as Hua Hin Municipality.

Does anybody know the purpose? If it's there a a communal fire extinguisher, why put it at the far end of the Soi? Surely in the middle would have been better. If we had a fire at my house, it would most likely take 5 minutes to get an extinguisher.

This is truly a mystery to me. Can somebody please throw a light on their purpose, and who can use them?

No empty fields around? Hot season is coming and it'll all be a big tinderbox by April.

Nothing obvious that will burn. I was wondering if similar extinguishers had appeared in all Sois.

I didn't try it, but I assumed it was break glass to access the extinguishers.

So nobody else has had one of these boxes mysteriously appear in their Soi?

Typical brainless situation! If there is a grass or bush fire hazard in the area, then a simple water fire hydrant is what is needed.
All fire extinguishers are not the same. Depending on what is on fire, the wrong extinguisher can be dangerous and make it worse.

Maybe all the EV car owners have asked for it

I may be wrong, but the mechanism on the right looks like a push to open type - normally a break the glass box, would have a hammer or something to do as such!!

Yes, it is clearly that sort of mechanism, but there is a key hole there as well, which I presume makes it lockable.

So you could have a fire, fire extinguishers, but unable to get access - sounds like Thai logic!!

On foot it must be a couple of minutes from my end of the Soi. If there was a fire, I think the house would be ashes first.

A red fire extinguisher is typically water-based, so only good for wood or paper fires. Cannot be used for oil based (like a kitchen fire) or electrical (fuse box short or similar) type of fire. The size also indicates it will be operable for a minute or so.
My guess is the tessabahn is trying to spend their allocated budget for the year so they would qualify for a request for an increase next year?

But why my Soi? Nobody else has reported one of these in their Soi. It just seems to be a random thing to put up on the wall. It's not doing any harm, but I just wonder why? It has been placed on the side of a concrete house with no windows in that wall, there's a concrete road, and then another concrete wall with no windows.
