Software development in Thailand

Post by DaveT »

As regular posters may remember, I'm looking to possibly retire to HH shortly. Had a great trip there recently and feel it is somewhere I can settle as well as enjoy with my Thai g/f.

Having said that, I've been working hard for many years, setting up various companies and selling them on. One of my current businesses is likely to be sold shortly, which is my "retirement" funding.

But having worked so hard for so long I'm not sure full retirement is for me yet though. Apart from perhaps 2-3 games of golf a week and 2-3 evenings enjoying myself of an evening in HH I reckon without something to keep my brain ticking over I'll go bananas.

So, I've been thinking of some software niche's, based around my current business, that I'd like to implement. Many UK companies now have their software development done in Russia, Rumania, India, etc. Excellent developers and the cost is obviously much, much lower.

Does anyone have any experience of software development in Thailand? I'll have a hack round the internet to see what I can find, but if anyone has any insight into this I'd appreciate it. I am presuming of course that Thai Universities provide Computer Science degrees - they're the best people to get, straight out of Uni, itching to work and with an interesting project. Mind you, from my experience with Thailand so far and many comments on here, the words "Thai" and "itching to work" don't often appear in the same sentence.

This may be a non-starter, but I have a project in mind and to develop it in Thailand would keep a serious interest for me, if the skill set exists.

You are right about the universities having Computer Science degree courses. Please be aware that your project will require you to form a Thai company and for you to have a work permit. Thais work well given the right motivation: The three "s" words - sanook, saduak and sabai.

Thanks.

Sure, I understand everything would have to be set up properly Company-wise and I'd need a work permit. Shouldn't think that will pose a problem if I'm forming a new business that will benefit the Thai economy.

My Thai is not so good yet though - what is sanook, saduak and sabai?

Sanook = fun
Saduak = convenience
Sabai = a feeling of well-being

Ah, right. Thanks.

Any idea what a good software developer makes as a salary over there?

If you are thinking of a salary for a Thai employee, I would guess it would be 40K plus but you may have a problem finding the right person outside Bangkok. My guess above is exactly that - a guess. Moderator Buksida may be more helpful.

Yes, Thai employees. The size of project I have in mind would probably need 3 developers and would take around a year to write.

By 40K do you mean 40K baht per month?
