Latest result on 2.0 Mbps CAT Telecom ADSL modem speed at 06:45 hrs.

Download Speed: 1706 kbps (213.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 718 kbps (89.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

At worst DL/UL can be 150 kbps/80 kbps and sometimes totally frozen.

Farang,

What is the cost if installation and monthly charge for this line.

Does it come with a landline telephone.

I currently have TT&T Maxnet 512/256 which can achieve about 60 KB/S off peak but usually 40KB/S. Sometime 0 like everyhting here.

I was about upgrade to 1024/512 but wish to check other options first.

I am in the centre of town,

This sheer luxury costs me 999 baht/mo + land line charges abt. 100 baht/mo.
Add VAT and it all is in da -hood of 1 100 b/mo.

The DL speed usually is anything from 200 to 700 kbps.

CatNet is hard by the Post Office on the second floor. All in all I have been fairly content with their service.

Good luck!

Well you must be the lucky one, I have the same service:

57.7 kilobits per second
Communications 57.7 kilobits per second
Storage 7 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 2.4 minutes
Subjective rating Slow

Remember you have to do a speedtest from an International server, not a Thai one to get an accurate result. It has been terrible for the last 2 months, I'm thinking of switching back to Maxnet Life.

Guess the CAT hinet account is about 1,070 per month but I'd seriously advise at least having a trial run first.

Got this from Bandwidhtplace:

188.2 kilobits per second
Communications 188.2 kilobits per second
Storage 23 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 44.6 seconds
Subjective rating Mediocre

And two minutes later this from TV speedometer:

Download Speed: 254 kbps (31.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 718 kbps (89.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

The slum I infest is fairly centrally located, that perhaps explains some of it.

Aint you the lucky one, I'm in the process of cancelling my service from CAT as speeds are seldom over 100Kbps.

They did tell me though that proximity to town centre was a big factor.

I've been reading up on ADSL and everything indicates that if your house/computer is more than 5 KM away from the telephone switiching office, you get a degraded signal/service or, no serive at all. I doubt CAT or anyone else offering ADSL will tell you that when they try to sell you the service.

I'm right at about the 5-6KM distance in pattaya and am not even going to attempt it. You guys should check your distances in HH. Pete

PS: Above factors may be the reason that wireless seems to be growing in Thailand over any other altertatives to dial up. I think you can buy wireless booster units to catch signals quite far from your residence.

Where I'm sitting in HK right now, this hotel has me connected at 10 mbps and there are 5 wireless networks available when my system scans for them. In other words, I am in on-line heaven here...LOL

Fcuking Abysmal are about the only two words I can find to describe the service from CAT.

Downloaded a 9MB file last night - 1 hour 25 minutes

Attempting to download my email - Timeout

Opening HHAD forum - 2-3 minutes per page

Avoid CAT hinet service like the plague unless you happen to live in the same building as their offices where you're likely to get something that resembles an internet connection.

I used to use wifi from 'sunshine' until it petered out last month. I then bought a 'Huawei' wifi Box from hutch on the 3rd floor market village and now always get a steady speed of 230kbs. Which I guess is ok. I am located near the Rockestra (as was)

Where do you pick the service up from? I have a wifi card in the laptop but never any available networks out where I am (Karat Village).

Again, distance from town seems to be my (and many others) problem.

With wireless I think important to mention that some networks are secure and some are not. That's a big deal if you do internet banking and bill payments. I think Windows XP will show you a 'lock' icon when the system is secure, on the wireless selection window when a service is detected. Pete

This is true, though if you have the correct precautions on your machine and try not to use IE you will be fine.

It would be nice just to have a network secure or otherwise here.
