Thought i'd give the heads up on a few new movies Iv'e watched recently.

'The day the earth stood still' - This is a remake of the 1951 classic of the same name. The story line remains virtually the same only the computer generated graphics drag it into the 21st century. However the plot is as thin as a Woolworth employes christmas bonus, eg virtually non existant!!
If you like your films a la 'Independance day' then this is the one for you. 4/10

'Seven Pounds' - This is the new Will Smith offering and it has to be said its not his usual type of thing.
The slow moving tale unravels at a leisurely pace and at times you wonder just where the hell the thing is going.
Just when you think about going down the pup a spark of interest keeps you tagging along and you begin glimpse signs of a script that may just turn out to be worth watching.
The ending it has to be said makes it all worth while. You will be glad you stayed at home... 7/10

'Gran Torino' - This is the latest directorial offering from Clint Eastwood, and it has to be said its a cracking good yarn.
Eastwood an ex Vietnam vet befriends a young Asian kid who he catches trying to steal his 1972 Grand Turismo.
A very moving story it may even have you reaching for the kleenex.
Why oh why he decides to sing (talk) part of the lead out song God only knows! 7/10

I watched Narnia 2 last week..... its taken me a week of saccharine withdrawal to get over the experience.

Yes the CGI was impressive (in bits). Yes the swoopy camera angles were cool....but the battle scenes were duff and badly scripted.

Heres an example....when you have a guerrilla army who are outnumbered do you:

a) form up outside a crumbly temple with a big flat field in front that allows the bigger opposing army to form up nicely and deploy its cavalry and artillery?

or

b) Hit the forest which is your natural habitat, where formations of troops and cavalry are broken up, and deploying catapults is impossible?

thats what you get when you put schoolkids in charge of a revolution.

but the story just sucks butt.....its just too sweet and sticky....toothache time.

Good for the kids...

shame as I liked the first one.

RESIDENT EVIL: DEGENERATION

bit of an odd one this as its actually entirely CGI (like the cut scenes in computer games) but has a pretty good plot and hangs together well. Some scary bits....seat jumpers.....

there are some bits where its obvious that the source is Japanese and it starts to get all Anime hammy plotline, but they are relatively few.

all in all worth a watch, and dvd quality copies are out on the net so copies in town should be good

KRONIKALS OF....oh god I got so bored I cant even type the name....sod it

NARNIA 2

please God...I know I haven been a good sniveling minion but please....should mine eye ever look upon another saccharine laced illogical sack of commercial cash in s**t like this please poke it out with red hot forks and ram a spikey bit up my fundement ....

christ im sick of posh kids.....

in the meantime we will,

instead,

review the contrastingly excellent TOKYO GORE POLICE.....

well

this is a 1hr 30 roller coaster ride into the full on horror thriller mad anime splatter fest that MACHINE GIRL is a prime example of. Madness, bad but good special effects, and nonsensical exchangeable plotlines a go go....

add a massive dose of black humor, some insane fake TV ads (like on robocop...)

and lasses with big swords.....

Japanese splatter horror at its best

lets put it this way....

the script writers of NARNIA 2 (god even that name is boring) would be hiding themselves deep in their wee soaked sheets even watching the trailer.....

GO GET IT

both available on hi quality local disks and your ever friendly internet

I liked the way that no matter how much was thrown at him he never doubted his ability to achieve his goal.
At the end of the film if memory serves me right he aparently returned to the salt flats a further 6 times ... :D

now one for all the kids, old and young out there....

IGOR

great fun film for all the family....take all the old classic horror film cliches, wash them through Monsters Inc and Discworld, and you get IGOR.....laugh out loud moments a plenty, some great voice casting (eg, Steve Buschemi as an immortal pet rabbit experiment that is permanently suicidal)....and cool CGI animation.

DVDRIP quality copies should be available from the disksellers or online now.

I recently watched -

Yes Man - New Jim carey film. If you are a Carey fan you will enjoy this rather predictable offering. 6/10

Che (part one) - Film about Che Guevaras early revolution days with Fidel Castro. This film is a sit down and concentrate type of film, but give it a fair crack of the whip and the rewards will be well worth it. Benicio Del Toro stars. 7/10

Slumdog Millionaire - This is a film about a young man who comes from the slums to take part in the Indian version of 'who wants to be a millionair' Its a long film but a beautifuly woven tale of love and tensions within the Hindi community. I really enjoyed this film. 8/10

Movies on DVD

Post by Arcadian »

Re Yes Man, I rarely watch film versions of books I have enjoyed and avoid Jim Carey films at all costs, making a career of pulling funny faces doesn`t do it for me now I`m nearly grown up.
