Re: Very Late Night Entertainment

Thank you Doggles, I've often wondered what it was in there. I've been past it at all hours of the day and night, but never seen any activity there. I've asked both my wife and my daughter what it was, and they couldn't tell me - actually, one answer I got was that it was where people went to work ...

Re: Very Late Night Entertainment

Has anyone frequented the Insomnia night club on soi 88? If so is it farang friendly? The one in Bangkok is quite cool but I don't the HH one is from the same stable.

Cheers!!

Re: beer prices

That goes against what even your winebuffs and top chefs say. I, personally, would have lager with an Indian or other spicy dish. I'm not really a wine buff but am crazy about Issan and Thai food, so like it very spicy. I agreed that lager rules until my brother (wine buff) got me into Alsace wine....

Re: beer prices

[quote="johnnyk" doggles, I don't think Chang would have splashed out big money to advertise on Everton shirts if the brew was not available in the UK. I was a Chang drinker but like many of my friends, have switched over to Leo. Singha has a nasty taste (to me) reminding me of Labatt's (C...

Re: beer prices

Yes Pete, here they're sold in Thai restaurants and cafes and in Asian supermarkets and the main reason that people buy them is to go with Thai food in the same way that Indian restaurants sell Cobra beer. I was in a Thai cafe here a couple of weeks ago and they even had a bottle of Mehkong behind ...

Re: beer prices

I think that was Red Bull. Chang and Singha are both readily available in Europe. I'd imagine that the reason they weren't available 7 years ago (well they just started gaining presence around that time) was a much more boring reason to do market size and margins! :) Had also heard the same story a...

Re: beer prices

I think it's 6.something% these days. I seem to recall it was 7+% when I first came here, 8 years ago? Singha is weaker at 5% but, unfortunately, also usually a fair bit more expensive. Yes 7+% sounds right. The urban myth on Khao San Road all those years ago was that it contained amphetamines too,...

Re: Thai BBQ

Up Chomsin Rd and over the railway crossing. past the supermarket immediately on your left and then follow the road to the right ( this about 200 mtrs past supermarket). Continue around the next bend ( about 400 mtrs) and the BBQ is on your right some 100mtrs Could you be kind enough to confirm if ...

Re: beer prices

A good bar to watch the world go by is Retrophillia, above the night market. But it's not particularly cheap. Montri, on the Hilton stretch, has decent prices of Chang beer (just be wary of the big glasses; they work out more expensive bt for bt than the small ones!) Thanks will look out for them, ...

Re: beer prices

You still don't see Beer Lao very often in HH so I can only thing the Thai beer companies are blocking it, at least to a certain extent. I also don't think there's much demand for it. Yes, tourists and expats may drink it, but my guess is very few Thais will. Am sure Beer Lao doesn't travel well. C...

Re: beer prices

Anyone got any recommendations for a bar with a good (cheap) happy hour where you can sit, read the paper, watch the world go by and not be called a 'hansum' man?
