Re: Distance between different languages

Yes I read most of it, and I get it. But the paper also addresses how languages/cultures are related and others are dissimilar and how language might have a bearing on that relationship. Your points are valid.

Re: Distance between different languages

Good stuff Bamboo Grove. I find this topic interesting and generally agree with the study, though admittedly didn't read it all. Certainly, geography plays a role in how close languages are to each other. I imagine before many European languages were exported, they were probably much more closely re...

Re: Local Thais have no interest in learning English

Somchai, Nanyang was only correcting your English, but you didn't get it, did you? Correcting my English? Shall we have a look? I said: They're not pleased at their school's choice of second-language study. Meaning they are not pleased -- they continue to be displeased. The school's decision in the...

Re: Local Thais have no interest in learning English

Does it hurt being corrected publicly like that? I'm sorry, perhaps I should have sent you a private message. Honestly, I didn't mean to ridicule you despite your condescending tone. (I'll pm you with a comprehensive explanation of present and past tense.) OK? Friends? *** Interesting notion that Th...

Re: Local Thais have no interest in learning English

My parents studied Latin in the 50s. They're not pleased at their school's choice of second-language study. Can I assume that you meant to say, "They were not pleased with their school's choice of a second language?" No you may not. They continue to be displeased (present tense) at their ...

Re: Chipped plates at restaurants?

Yes it bothers me. That's why I ask the chef to spoon my meal out onto the sidewalk where I eat in on all fours. The cutlery here, if not sanded down with an angle-grinder between servings, is full of germs, too.

Re: Local Thais have no interest in learning English

If I was Thai, I'd send my kids to learn Chinese, any variant. It's a growing language from the world's second largest economy with a billion speakers on Thailand's doorstep. I don't see how ASEAN increases the need for English speakers. I attribute the hype to farangs trying to inflate their self-e...

Re: Local Thais have no interest in learning English

I often hear that ASEAN (2016 AEC) is going to increase the need for and usefulness of English speakers in Thailand.
Why is that? Is English going to become the default language?

Re: Routes to Khorat

Some falangs are also fond of using terms like the "Khon Kaen Highway." What is the Khon Kaen Highway? A person from Korat would have a very different idea than a person from Udon Thani. A person from KK has no idea what the KK Highway is. Why not specify? Call it Highway 2, South of Udon....

Re: Khorat

Follow the signs to Chang Wattana.......only problem will be when you hit the end of the expressway, it gets a little confusing. If you're going up past Sing Buri just stay left. If you want to go on the old Asia Highway go right. Sorry, i have to disagree. As posted on another thread recently you ...

Re: Chinese tourists (and their habits) surge into Thailand

I was sitting in my truck today at the wet market waiting for my wife to pop in and buy chilis. It took the typical 40 minutes. As I sat there, three old Thai bitties strolled past. Two of them threw a lung simultaneously into the ka-tunk ka-tunk concrete drains. I started laughing. Five seconds lat...

Slapping on some lipstick and eyelashes doesn't change the fact that they're men.
Genetically they have an X and a Y chromosome -- even if they lop off their knob.

Men. 100%

Re: Broken Mower

Top advice Steve, I often consider plowing the whole thing under and paving it.
(Paved Paradise, and put up a parking lot) But the monthly two days of drudge make the remaining 28 so nice.
Back to the OP -- good luck finding a new mower, let us know what you decide upon. 8)

Re: 1000 terabytes on a DVD

Interesting story. It wasn't terribly long ago that single DVD movies often came in a set of 2 CDs.
