Re: Foreigners arrested for alleged drug offences in Hua Hin

Those who peddle alcohol for easy profit are unprincipled, immoral and should be labeled criminals and more often than not will be quick to resort to violence when their income stream is threatened. They serve no purpose other than to feed their own greed. It is better for the minority that this na...

Re: Full Moon, Chinese New Year and Wan Phra

If we take Vesak Day, for example, which occurs on the Full Moon, this year it is celebrated in Thailand on 1st June, which was a full moon in 8000 BC. However this year the actual full moon will be on 2nd June.

Why was it Wan Phra?
They are using a calendar that is frozen in time. Yesterday would have been the New Moon 10,000 years ago. This is what Wan Phra refers to.

Re: Full Moon, Chinese New Year and Wan Phra

How does that affect the calculation of the phases of the moon: New Moon, Full Moon, etc.? Or, is Wikipedia incorrect to say that วันพระ falls on the day of the four phases of the moon? The date on which the New Moon, Full Moon etc occurs changes over time. In 8000 BC, for example, the New Moon wou...

Re: Full Moon, Chinese New Year and Wan Phra

Anyone know why the Thai lunar calendar is two days off? Do they ever adjust it to get back in sync with the actual phases of the moon? (Leap Year, anyone?) Thailand uses the sidereal calendar which does not account for the precession of the equinoxes. It is based on the position of the stars not t...

Re: Thailand tourist slump continues

Occupancy in the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok has fallen 34% over the last year and their profits have fallen 117%. Its probably a bellwether for the tourist sector. The management doesn't have any doubt about the reason: The reason of net loss for financial results in the third quarter year 2014 compa...

Re: Asbestos use in Thailand

Yes, my father too died from an asbestos related problem. His was put down to being a Royal Marine on board Battleships and Aircraft Carriers - unsafe lagging. Sorry to hear that. It is not just people who work with asbestos who are being affected. This was one of the frightening things about the a...

Re: Snakes in the garden

The only dangerous snake is the krait. This is because they sleep during the day and you might accidentally tread on them. Its a myth that snakes are dangerous. If you leave them alone they will leave you alone. They try to get out of your way if they can. Even if you get bitten its rarely fatal. In...

Re: Do the foreigner buy stock in Thailand?

You can buy stocks in Thailand but you cannot buy on margin and you cannot vote on company resolutions. If you want to collect the dividends then be sure to buy through NVDR, which removes most of the restrictions made on foreigners buying stock in Thailand. The Thai authorities want foreigners to i...

Re: Traditional Thai Jewellery

My daughter is doing a school project to design jewellery and has chosen Thailand as her inspiration. Does anybody here have any pieces that they think reflect Thai culture and design or have any idea as to what epitomises this? I don't think she'll get a good grade for copying some of the Tiffany ...
