Since this original post, the exchange rate from baht to USD has dropped radically. I saw one place today a rate of 33.4 to 1USD. I cannot say for other parts of Thailand, however, in Pattaya you can open an account at Bangkok Bank with just your passport. Most of the other banks require all the necessary paperwork. Re-Entry permits...
There are two re-entry permits, single entry and multiple entry. Both are easy enough to get and can be had at the immigration bureau when you get the retirement visa. I would suppose that I am an expat of a still unnamed category. I moved here for a number of reasons. Cost of living in the States, a desire to live here since I had been here 35+ years ago, political direction, simpler lifestyle, not to mention the beautimus women. Cheers! Jim
