Re: What would you have done? -- Chung won’t listen.

They want to do things their way, the Thai way, the easiest, quickest, cheapest, sloppiest way. They say, “This is the way we do it.” Their way, invariably, leads to problems down the road — after they have been paid and are gone. Unfortunately, unless you get hold of a tradesman recommended by som...

Re: Thais & Facebook

IMO, Facebook and it's ilk has to be one of (if not the ) most personally and socially destructive things invented in the last 20-30 years....not a fan at all. I agree completely. I can see the value for far-away relatives being able to see what their family are up to - good way to see photos etc -...

Re: Homeward Bound?

Sorry Siani - but GLC has been in Thailand quite a few years now, and that would certainly present problems if he returns. Getting a place to rent - fine - but landlords need references, ID, income details etc. Some won't accept 'DSS' even if he was able to claim help with rent - or indeed able to ...

Re: Moving back to home country after living in Thailand

All the best with the move. I came back to the UK after nearly 6 years in HH and haven't regretted a moment of it. Nice to have the four seasons and not the incessant heat and feel I can be a lot more active now. Not missing noisy neighbours, soi dogs, needless bureaucracy & red tape, visa runs ...

Re: Income Tax on money brought into Thailand for personal u

There was an old rule along those lines and it had some requirement that money brought in had to be from current year "income" if it was to be taxed. How they'd prove that I don't know unless you were being paid direct from an employer to Thailand. Never heard of anyone being pulled up on ...

Re: Why do Westerners Call Themselves Farang?

It's also nothing whatsoever to do with what Pleng was talking about. The 'l' and 'r' issue is about speaking Thai, not English. I was just giving a simplistic example in our language, of how children would be corrected for mispronounciation. That stands equally for Thai children and (dare I say it...

Re: Why do Westerners Call Themselves Farang?

When I used to teach English to foreign students, I never taught or expected them to speak the Queen's English, and I'm certainly not going to go around speaking "properly" in Thai, when nobody I associate with does. I've never been an English teacher, so you'll know better than me, but i...

Re: Why do Westerners Call Themselves Farang?

I think when talking to Thais it's a useful term to help quickly establish if they're talking about a westerner or a Thai person, because as said above, they're not great at identifying different nationalities. I've used it myself in that respect. But I have to admit it annoys me a bit when it's use...

Re: International Driver's License - Where, how fast?

From a very quick google the most recent info I could find was on the other forum that need not be named. IDPs obtained from Mochit and Chatuchak transport offices with different comments as to the documents required for one to be issued. In Pattaya people could apply at the local transport office b...

Re: International Driver's License - Where, how fast?

The above statement was not true when my son-in-law visited the UK. I checked it out at the time, and an International licence was definitely a requirement. Of course, that was 10 years ago, so things may have changed. Here's how to find out. No mention of requiring an IDP: https://www.gov.uk/drivi...

Re: International Driver's License - Where, how fast?

No. What I need is the international driving license for Thailand. I have a 5-year Thai license already. Do you need one because you don't have a driving licence in your own country or wherever you're heading to? I can only speak about the UK, but you can drive in the UK on a foreign licence for up...

Re: UK Visa

If it's the same online set up as for settlement visas, then you only have to log in every 7 days to keep your application data alive. Don't even need to add or change anything. That other forum is a great source of up-to-date info for UK visa applications. Current processing times should be on the ...
